Dear PS 20 Families,
On Thursday, May 30, 2024 we will be hosting our fourth annual $10K for PS 20 Social Justice Run, a benefit run at Fort Greene Park to raise $10,000 for the school PTA’s Justice, Equity, Diversity & Inclusion (JEDI) Fund. Like last year, we are excited to invite students and families to enjoy the rest of the day with us for a Family Picnic in the park. We encourage all who are able to please join us to cheer on our students and enjoy the picnic with activities afterwards.
HOW IT WORKS
Leading up to May 30th, students will be working together with their teachers to focus on a social cause under the umbrella of JEDI: issues like LGBTQ+ rights, racial and gender equality, immigrant rights, climate change, fighting hunger and homelessness, etc. What issue do they want to raise awareness around and work to have a positive impact upon?
Students will then work to raise awareness around the issue and help raise funds for the cause they have chosen - See attached sponsorship form. This year half of the funds raised from the race (after we account for event costs) will go directly to organizations doing work to address the causes your children's classes have chosen and the other half will go to the PTA’s JEDI Fund.
On the morning of May 30th, the run will be led by activist, runner and PS 20 parent Kelvin Coffey (founder of Define New York Run Club and co-founder of Running to Protest) along with other community leaders.
We all know that the many injustices in society are far too embedded and deep to tackle all at once – but just like running, it’s about the individual and taking one stride at a time. With this day of action, we hope to bring more awareness to a variety of issues and engage our corner of Brooklyn, taking meaningful steps each day towards a more Just, Equitable, Diverse and Inclusive world.

HISTORY: The PTA launched this event in 2021, in the wake of the murder of George Floyd, and is a cornerstone of our school’s commitment to addressing social injustices. All proceeds from the race will go to the PTA’s JEDI Fund – a valuable resource that allows us to do everything from conducting workshops to ensuring all students can participate in school activities like book fairs and field trips.
