To the Children's School Community:
This week we are celebrating Inclusive Schools Week. Inclusive Schools Week celebrates the progress that schools have made in providing a supportive and quality education to an increasingly diverse student population, including students who are marginalized due to disability, gender, socio-economic status, cultural heritage, language preference, and other factors.
At the Children's School, we are asking staff to engage in conversations with students around community and inclusivity. Administrators will completing a read aloud for students of We Move Together. Each morning, a new Thinking Map is posted at the main entrance to capture reflections about creating inclusive communities. We will post theses refections inside the building.
Fourth and fifth graders will participate in the student Inclusive Schools Summit this Friday facilitated by the NYC Department of Education and explore the concept of "ableism".
We are also happy to announce that a group of 4th and 5th grade students are a part of the city-wide Inclusion Advisory Group facilitated by Ms. Tiffany and Ms. Emily. This is a student group interested in inclusion, disability rights, leadership, and current events gathering to provide input to the NYCDOE and 372K about event planning celebrating inclusion.
Please see the following website for resources to support these conversations at home:
We are excited to include these activities as part of our equity work.
