Juneteenth National Independence Day

Juneteenth commemorates a declaration of the Emancipation Proclamation in Texas in 1865, and each year it serves both as a celebration of freedom and an opportunity to recommit to the fight for racial justice in all aspects of American life.

Last year, President Biden signed a bill establishing June 19 as Juneteenth National Independence Day, a holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States.

The Children's  joins in honoring Black Americans who have fought for a more just and equal society throughout our history and reflecting on how we can best continue their work.
