Participatory Budgeting Events & Voting in District 39!
Wed, Mar 30 8:22am

Make your voice heard! If you are a resident of District 39 (check your city council district here), you can vote on how to spend $1.5 million on projects to improve our community. Everyone age 11 and up can vote, regardless of citizenship or voter registration status. This initiative is called Participatory Budgeting. It gives real people a real say in how our money is spent. It is one way we can envision a just budget.

Voting: You can vote with the digital ballot here from April 2nd until April 10th.

Events: Sign up to come to the PB Expo on April, 3rd (a science fair about all the projects + voting site) and other in-person voting events with music and dance here.

Hello friends and family!

I’m writing to you to invite you to VOTE in participatory budgeting in District 39 from April 2nd to April 10th!! If you live in Council Member Shahana Hanif’s district (check your city council district here) Kensington, Borough Park, Windsor Terrace, Park Slope, Gowanus, Carroll Gardens, Cobble Hill, and the Columbia Waterfront you have the opportunity to vote on how CM Hanif’s office will spend 1.5 million dollars in community infrastructure and programming.

Participatory Budgeting is one way we can envision budget justice, it gives real people a say in how real money is spent. I’m a firm believer in this direct democracy initiative! I hope you will share widely so we can reach every neighbor in the district. Everyone, regardless of citizenship or voter registration status, can vote in person, and those over the age of 14 can vote digitally. You can vote with the digital ballot here from April 2nd until April 10th.

Join District 39 PB at one of the following events to meet volunteers, learn more about the process, and vote.

  • Sunday, April 3rd, from 3-5 PM at the Park Slope Armory YMCA, join the Participatory Budgeting Expo! Learn about the projects on this year’s ballot in a fun science fair setting and then vote for your favorite ones! This is a family-friendly event - featuring an art table for kids to craft! RSVP.
  • Saturday, April 9th at 1 PM come to Kensington Plaza for our Pop-Up PB music and voting event hosted by the Singing Winds!  RSVP.
  • Sunday, April 10th we are teaming up with the Old Stone House to host a multigenerational salsa class on their lawn from 3-4 PM. Dance with your community and stick around from 4-5 PM for more in-person PB voting. RSVP.

Virtual Events

  • April 4th from 12-1 PM join us on zoom panel titled, What’s Next for Participatory Budgeting? Innovations from Around the World. As our democracy faces new threats, it is time to think bigger about the role of PB. Hear speakers from Mexico, Montreal, and Scotland share how their countries are using PB to address climate change, pursue social justice, and expand democracy. After the panel, we will have a 15 min zoom room open for virtual voting - stay on to vote! RSVP for the zoom link.
  • April 7th from 7-8 PM, we are hosting a virtual polling location! Come hear brief remarks from past PB winners and then vote on your top projects for 2022! RSVP for the zoom link.

If you have any questions or want information on how to do voting outreach to your community please reach out to the District 39 PB Director Hannah Henderson-Charnow at hhenderson-charnow@council.nyc.gov
