Dear Parents and Community Members:

Earlier today, we were informed that Vanessa Burkett, Educational Assistant, has passed away due to complications associated with the Coronavirus (COVID-19).

We are deeply saddened by this news and mourn with you all.  Ms. Vanessa was a dedicated and beloved educator in our school community.  She will be deeply missed. Vanessa is survived by her husband of forty years, Charles, and their three children Jasmin, Violet and Charles, Jr.  She also had ten amazing grandchildren that she was very proud of.

During this time, children may be feeling very confused and saddened, and they may ask questions about death.  Listening to your child at this critical time is very important. You can help them express their concerns and feelings.   For younger children, this can be done through drawing pictures, reading books, and talking about their emotions. For older children, it may mean simply taking the time to talk, once they are ready to do so.

If your child or family needs additional assistance, counselors will be available to meet with you over the telephone or via video chat.  Please email me at for assistance in setting up a time to meet with a counselor.

We want to do anything we can to support you during this difficult time.  Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help you or your child.  I ask that you join us in keeping the family of Ms. Vanessa Burkett in your thoughts at this time.
