The following announcement is brought to you by the P.S. 10 PTA Sustainability Committee:
PS 10 and the PTA Sustainability Committee announce our support of the upcoming Student Climate Strike on Friday, September 20th. We will send more information about the actions being planned school-wide (and options for those who opt out), but in the meantime, here are some resources to learn more about this momentous, kid-led, event (and some kid-made signs in the attachment for inspiration)!
#FridaysForFuture is a movement that began in August 2018, after 15 years old Greta Thunberg sat in front of the Swedish parliament every school day for three weeks to protest against the lack of action on the climate crisis. She posted what she was doing on Instagram and Twitter and it soon went viral. On the 8th of September, Greta decided to continue striking every Friday until the Swedish policies provided a safe pathway well under 2-degree C, i.e. in line with the Paris agreement.
The hashtags #FridaysForFuture and #ClimateStrike spread and many students and adults began to protest outside of their parliaments and local city halls all over the world. More information can be found here: https://fridaysforfuture.org/news
Our hope is that we will be able to galvanize our PS 10 community to make sure that our (and particularly our students') voices are heard on this issue that is and will continue to have lasting ramifications . To that end, some classes will be creating signs and opinion pieces around this movement, and fifth grade classes will be joining their fellow students from schools throughout the district to be a part of the #ClimateStrike movement.
Please be on the lookout for more information at the beginning of next week as well as trip slips/parent chaperone requests for the participating fifth grade classes!
