A message from the Art Teacher
Thu, Sep 12

Dear families,

My name is Julie Brunner Cross and I am so excited to have the pleasure of teaching your children art this year at P.S. 107. I want to take a moment to introduce myself, or re-introduce myself, to you. This is my fourth year at the school, but I am certainly not new to the school and community. Returning parents may know me as a former 107 parent, as a chair of the 107 arts committee, or as a 107 after school art teacher. Others may know me from teaching art in the community at the Park Slope Armory and Prospect Park Y.

I am an artist who has been working as an art educator for 18+ years to individuals from age 1 through 101 in public and private schools, universities, community centers, and beyond. In addition to teaching, in past I have worked as a graphic designer and an art gallery director. I have advanced certification in Art and Design Education from Pratt Institute, an MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in Sculpture, and a BFA in Visual Arts with a minor in Art History from the University of Arizona.

This year in art your child will be creating some amazing things. Employing a choice based and cross-curricular approach, connections will be made to the language arts, social studies, math and science. As an educator it is my goal that students learn through play and exploration, developing a strong capacity for creative problem solving through studio thinking.

Periodically I may send home a parent request for additional supplies for a special project, or for parent volunteers to assist in the classroom. I am currently working on a wish list through Amazon. Be looking out for a link soon!

I expect students to be open-minded in my class, respectful, and to have fun as we journey through art together. The class expectations are below. Please review and talk about them with your child.

  • Always do your best.
  • Respect yourself and others.
  • Take care of the art materials and the art studio.

If students are having significant trouble following the expectations, I will be sure to let you know so that we can work on a solution together. I believe that for students to be successful at school, we need to work as a team.

Please feel free to contact me at any time with concerns or questions about your child’s art education. My hope is that your child will have the absolute best art class experience possible and gain new skills and confidence throughout the year! If there’s anything specific I can do to help make this happen, please let me know. The best way to contact me is: julie@ps107.org

Finally, on Wednesday, September 25th, 2019 I will be presenting with the other specialty teachers at curriculum night. Our panel will be from 5:00 - 5:45 pm in the 4thfloor Science area.

I look forward to seeing you then. Thank you so much for reading!

With best regards,

Ms. Julie
