Are You PTA Board Material? (HINT: probably yes)

With the arrival of spring comes the realization that, gasp, the end of the school year is in sight.

And while we welcome the impending summer, it also makes it feel all the more cognizant of the fact that the PS 107 PTA Board will need to fill its open positions sooner than later!

There are a wide variety of openings, suited for all types, so take a look!

CO-DIRECTOR OF COMMUNICATIONS (2 OPENINGS): 

Do you love being informed about everything going on at PS 107? Do you have flexibility throughout your day or in the evening to send messages to our school community? Do you like to write? Do you consider yourself to be moderately tech savvy? Do you have a gift for selecting just the right GIF to relay your message? If so, this might be the role for you! (This role is shared between 2 people!)

 

Role: Work closely with the Co-Director to coordinate all communication between the PTA and parents/guardians. 

 

Responsibilities

  • Sending Konstella “blasts” to families regarding all types of school events, including the “Week Ahead” 
  • Overseeing Konstella implementation and education.
  • Coordinating class parents, 
  • Updating school calendars, class parent and weekly emails, committee sign-ups maintaining important PTA documents on Google Drive or similar.
  • PS107 website, either directly using Squarespace or via technology volunteers. 

 

Expected Time Commitment: 5-10 hours per week

COMMUNITY OUTREACH COMMITTEE LEAD:

Do you feel passionate about bringing equity to Brooklyn? Do you volunteer or want to? Are you great at convincing others to give their time and resources? If so, you might be a great fit to lead the Community Outreach Committee! 

 

Role: Serve as a liaison and advocate for sister school PS 169. Look for volunteer and resource sharing opportunities and communicate them to PS 107 families.

 

Responsibilities

  • Maintain a relationship with our sister school, PS 169 in Sunset Park, including understanding their unique needs 
  • Devise ways to share resources between the schools including fundraising initiatives, and develop opportunities for the kids to partner. 
  • Raise funds for and share resources with communities in need, including book, clothing and food drives, the UNICEF halloween coin drive, holiday gift drives, school supply and technology drives and others

 

Expected Time Commitment: 5 hours per week

LOWER GRADE PARENT REPRESENTATIVE:

Are you a seasoned PS 107 parent with a child in grades PreK through 2nd? Would you like to be a go-to for all things related to PS 107’s lower grades? Do you enjoy getting to know other families? If so, the Lower Grade Parent Representative role might be the right fit for you! 

 

Role: Serve as a liaison and advocate for lower grade students and their families. 

 

Responsibilities

  • Co-authors a welcome letter and PS 107 FAQs
  • Organizes the Pre-K and Kindergarten welcome picnic that takes place before the first day of school in Prospect Park. 
  • Organizes and re-stocks the “Clothing Closet” which is used by our youngest students in time of accidents.

 

Expected Time Commitment: 1-2 hours per week

RECORDING SECRETARY: 

Do you love to write? Are you excellent at taking notes? Are you great at following through on tasks and want to be more involved in the PS 107 PTA? Being the PTA Recording Secretary may be just the role for you! 

 

Role: Attend every PTA meeting and PTA Board Meeting. Record minutes at each meeting. 

 

Responsibilities

  • Take notes at PTA meetings and PTA Board meetings
  • Hangs the “PTA Meeting This Week” banners outside the school and writes Konstella reminders 
  • For in-person PTA meetings, arranges for pizza and babysitting for evening meetings
    • Requests checks to pay for pizza and babysitting 

Expected Time Commitment: 1-2 hours per week

ADDITIONAL ROLES (OPTION TO BE EXECUTIVE BOARD MEMBER)

DIRECTOR OF COMMUNITY PARTNERS: 

Are you on a first name basis with your local barista?  Do you love networking? Would you like to be referred to as the Mayor of Park Slope? Director of Community Partners is the position for you!

 

Role: Create business partnerships within and around PS107 community 

 

Responsibilities:

  • Work to create business partnerships within and around the PS 107 community
  • Coordinate with the all Event Chairs (Fall Festival, Auction, etc) to help secure sponsorships for PS107 events. 

Expected Time Commitment: 1-2 hours per week

DIRECTOR OF COMMUNITY EVENTS (1-2 people): 

Do you fondly remember the first time you attended a PS107 welcome breakfast? Do your kids love Grandparents Day? Do you love to party at the Spring Fling? Would you like to plan these events yourself? Would you be great at planning both in-person and virtual events, if needed? Sounds like you would be interested in community events! 

 

Role: Oversee and plan events at the school

 

Responsibilities:

  • Organize and Plan Welcome Breakfast, PS107 Day, Grandparents Day, Teacher Appreciation Breakfast, Pre-K / Kindergarten Breakfast and Spring Fling. 
  • Chairs may be appointed to assist with any events. 

Expected Time Commitment: 2-10 hours per event

DIRECTOR OF THE AUCTION: 

Do you love planning fancy parties and galas? Do you want to go down in PS 107 history as throwing “that amazing action party?” Would you like to manage the largest fundraising event for the school?

 

Role: Oversee the Annual Auction Committee and execute all aspects of the Auction Gala. 

 

Responsibilities:

  • Secure venue and caterer
  • Lead committee in soliciting auction donations
  • Recruit volunteers for auction night
  • Throw an amazing party!

 

Expected Time Commitment: 2+ hours per week, more leading up to event

DIRECTOR OF FALL FESTIVAL: 

Remember the first time you attended the Fall Festival and how much fun your family had? Were you amazed at the impressive number of pies and chili? Do you love researching bouncy castle vendors?  Help make it happen again!

 

Role: Oversee the Fall Festival Committee and execute all aspects of the event.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Work with Director of Community Partners to find sponsors
  • Secure permits for school and 14th Street
  • Organize external entertainment and food (bouncy castle, magic show, musician, hot dogs, etc) and internal entertainment, such as face painting, community book sale, pumpkin painting
  • Oversee food sales and chili & pie contests

 

Expected Time Commitment: 2+ hours per week, more leading up to event

NON-EXECUTIVE BOARD POSITIONS

GREEN AND HEALTHY/GARDEN

Do you have a green thumb? Does seeing children eat veggies make your heart sing? You sound like our next Green & Healthy Committee Chair! 

 

Role: Help teach students about the importance of taking care of our environment, making healthy nutritional choices, and the significance of each student's environmental impact.

 

Responsibilities

  • Maintain the Sunshine Garden
  • Plan and lead Harvest Day,
  • Lead school-wide recycling and composting programs (if/when they return)

 

Expected Time Commitment: 2+ hours per week, more leading up to Harvest Day

SCHOOL SUPPLIES/EDUKIT MANAGER

Do you get a thrill opening a box of new crayons? Do you go crazy for new school supplies? Do you love one-stop shopping? Help the PS 107 community ensure that everyone has the school supplies they need when the next school year starts. 

 

Role: The PTA is looking for a few volunteers to join this spring to support with the coordination of EduKit ordering and then these volunteers would take the lead in the 2021-22 school year. 

 

Responsibilities

  • Work with grades/teachers to develop classroom supply lists 
  • Work with EduKit to order the needed supplies
  • Prepare EduKit messages for Konstella
  • Work with the Community Outreach Committee to provide school supplies for PS 169

 

Expected Time Commitment: 2-4 hours 2 times a year
