Community and Citywide Education Councils are elected every two years.

 

February 14, 2019 will mark the start of the next election to fill all 325 elected seats for the two-year term that begins on July 1, 2019.

 

The Community and Citywide Education Councils give parents a powerful voice in shaping the policies and priorities for New York City schools. From advising the Chancellor to working directly with the district superintendent and reviewing district educational programs and needs, the 32 Community Education Councils and 4 Citywide Education Councils play a major role in education policy and help make our public schools the best they can be.

 

Community Education Councils (CECs)
CECs offer parents the opportunity to impact education at the district level. Each CEC consists of 11 voting members: 9 elected parents of students in PreK–8th grade (including a parent of an English Language Learner and a parent of an IEP student), 2 Borough President appointees, and 1 non-voting high school student.

 

Citywide Education Councils
Citywide Councils offer parents the opportunity to shape education policy for specific student populations. Like CECs, these councils have 11 voting members each (9 elected parents and 2 appointees), except for the Citywide Council on High Schools, which has 13 members (10 elected parents and 3 appointees). Each council also has 1 non-voting high school student. The four Citywide Councils are:

 

Parents can go to www.nycparentleaders.org from February 14 – March 14, 2019 to apply for a seat on a Community and/or Citywide Education Council.
