Earth Month! Wed collection, 5th grade Green Team, and local Earth Day events (CLARIFICATION RE: COLLECTION)
Tue, Apr 16 6:41am

The collection of Terracycle and eclipse glasses is Wed morning 4/17 at drop-off, along with the Community Outreach food collection.  Thank you!

Thank you to kids in PS107 Afterschool for making Earth Month posters!  We’ll be hanging them all over the school this week.

  • April 17th Terracycle and eclipse glasses drop off: Remember to bring your Terracycle (details below)… and add your eclipse glasses!
    • Terracycle: “Not sure what to do with your kids' old undies and broken Leapfrog laptop? We’re here to help!” For Earth Month, we'll gladly take this waste off your hands for our Terracycle program: soiled/torn kid's clothes that no one wants, and electronic toys/learning devices, oral care and squeeze pouch waste.
    • Eclipse glasses: We’ll donate those for kids worldwide (via Warby Parker or Eclipse USA) to use in eclipses, including the one in Latin America this August.
  • Did you know that there is a student Green Team? A dedicated group of 5th graders meet regularly with Mr. Ed and have undertaken an impressive list of activities in the school:
    • School wide slide show to educate their fellow students about waste in school, the cafeteria, and at home... including tips when grocery/shopping to bring home less new, and re-use as much as you can.
    • Twice weekly “Trash-talk Tuesday/Thursday” announcements to educate on sustainability (written by them!)
    • Monitoring the classrooms’ recycling and grading them on a rubric to measure and improve.
    • We thank those 5th graders and Mr. Ed for their leadership!
  • Thanks to all the families who came out on Sunday to clean up litter in Prospect Park. We’ll be organizing more litter cleanups in the coming weeks - look out for info on Konstella.
  • Community Earth Month Events!
    • 4/21: Spring Clean & Green with Assembly member Robert Carroll at Park Circle  in Prospect Park: e- & textile recycling, kid's stop n' swap, plus giveaways, special services, info & demos. Details here.
    • 4/29: Community eWaste event - From 10-2pm at John Jay Educational Campus, the LES Ecology Center will be collecting working and non-working e-Waste. See link for details.

Terracycle details: Items will be sorted by students, then sent to Terracycle instead of landfills.  Our school earns points towards actions such as planting trees to help reforestation, and reducing carbon from the atmosphere. So far PS107 has diverted 30 lbs of waste! See the links below, or attached flyer for details for what’s accepted.
