Hearing on Health & Wellness Instruction in NYC Schools and

Int. 365, Int. 560, Int. 1283, Int. ___, Res. 238, Res. 632 & Res. 716

 

The City Council’s Education Committee, chaired by Council Member Mark Treyger, will hold an oversight hearing on, “Health & Wellness Instruction in NYC Schools” as well as to consider Int. 365, Int. 560, Int. 1283, Int. ___, Res. 238, Res. 632 & Res. 716.  Below is information regarding the upcoming hearing:

 

Hearing on:    Oversight: “Health & Wellness Instruction in NYC Schools” and

Int. 365, Int. 560, Int. 1283, Int. ___, Res. 238, Res. 632 & Res. 716

Date:              Wednesday, January 16, 2019

Time:              1:00 pm (*public testimony is estimated to begin sometime after 3:00pm)

Place:              Council Chambers – City Hall

 

 

In addition to the oversight topic, “Health & Wellness Instruction in NYC Schools” the Committee will also hear testimony on the following:

 

Int. 365-2018 - A Local Law to amend the administrative code of the city of New York in relation to requiring the department of education to stock opioid antagonists in all school buildings

 

Int. 560-2018 - A Local Law in relation to creating a task force to study the feasibility of starting middle schools and high schools after 8:30 am in order to reduce adolescent sleep deprivation

 

Int. 1283-2018 - A Local Law to amend the administrative code of the city of New York, in relation to reporting on food and nutrition education in New York city schools

 

Int. ___ - A Local Law to amend the administrative code of the city of New York, in relation to requiring the department of education to report information regarding sexual health education

 

Res. 238-2018 - Resolution calling upon the New York City Department of Education to ban processed meats from being served in New York City public schools.

 

Res. 632-2018 - Resolution calling upon the New York City Department of Education to create a diabetes and prediabetes health based curriculum.

 

Res. 716-2019 - Resolution calling upon the New York City Department of Education to adopt all of the policy recommendations of the Mayor's Sexual Health Education Task Force and provide comprehensive sexual health education on a regular basis, across all grade levels.

We invite members of Community Education Councils, parents, students, educators, advocates, and all other stakeholders and interested members of the public to testify at this hearing.  Testimony will be limited to 2-3 minutes per person to allow as many as possible to testify.  Although the hearing starts at 1:00 p.m., the Administration (Department of Education), as well as other witnesses (such as elected officials) have been invited to testify and answer questions from Council Members at the outset, so we do not expect to hear from others until approximately 3:00 pm or later.  Please make sure you fill out a witness slip on the desk of the Sergeant-at-arms if you wish to testify.  If you plan to bring written testimony, please bring at least 20 copies.  If you are unable to attend the hearing and wish to submit written testimony, please email your testimony to jatwell@council.nyc.gov either before the hearing or within 3 days of the hearing.  

 

All hearings are livestreamed and videotaped and posted on the Council’s website.  Written testimony for each hearing is also posted on the Council’s website.
