IMPORTANT: Policies on teachers providing work when students are absent
Mon, Dec 13 1:49pm

Dear PS 107 Families,

The holidays are approaching, and we are entering a time where families may be traveling out of town before the NYC DOE’s winter break officially begins on Friday, December 24th.

I am writing to let you know about DOE policies regarding teachers providing work to students who are traveling or who are home sick (not related to the COVID-19 pandemic). At this time, because of a Memorandum of Agreement between the NYCDOE and the United Federation of Teachers (NYC’s teachers union), teachers are only required to provide work to students who are quarantining due to exposure to COVID-19 or illness due to COVID-19.

This means that teachers will not be able to provide work for children to complete if they are traveling or home with another illness. Of course, our teachers will work with your child to catch them up when they return to the classroom. In the meantime, if your child will be absent due to travel or non-COVID-related illness, I suggest the following:

  • Read, read, read! Independent reading is always an excellent activity. Children can access thousands of high-quality children’s books on Epic or Sora (available free to all NYC public school students; click here for set-up instructions).
  • Write daily in a journal. Children can keep a trip journal or an I’m-miserable-at-home-while-I’m-sick journal.
  • Zearn is a free app that is aligned with our Eureka Math curriculum. Anything that children do on Zearn will be beneficial!

Please let me know if you have any questions regarding this policy. I wish you a happy and healthy holiday season!

Warmly,

Ms Joanna
