Dear PS107 Families,
As you may already be aware, an attempted kidnapping of a 15 year-old girl took place last Friday 9/22, at 2:30pm on 7th Avenue and 19th Street. Fortunately, the victim successfully escaped and ran to a secure location. The two perpetrators are still at large however. The police Wanted Poster with details about the incident is attached to this email.
I wanted to bring this to your attention so you could speak to your child(ren) about street safety and being alert to strangers when walking in the neighborhood. For children who self-dismiss, it might be prudent to arrange for chaperoning by parent-friends, older children, or care-givers if possible. And for children who arrive early to play in the school yard, it would be helpful to share supervision with parents or care-givers of other students who also arrive early.
Our teachers have been informed of the incident and have been asked to take extra precautions with their students when going to the Armory or elsewhere in the neighborhood. We want to model best street safety behaviors and to emphasize how important it is to be aware of one's surroundings at all times. While we hope the perpetrators of this crime are found swiftly, we want our students to learn these important safety skills as habits they will carry with them throughout their lives.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
