Dear PS 107 Families,
I hope that your children had a peaceful day at school today, able to focus on the things that elementary school children should be focused on — learning, friends, and play. I know that many of us experienced feelings of pain, sadness, rage, and fear in the aftermath of yesterday's school shooting in Uvalde, Texas.
First, I wanted to share one more resource for talking to children about tragic events, this time from Common Sense (thank you Tali Horowitz). It's short and has simple-to-use strategies and tips.
Second, on Tuesday, May 31st at noon, we will hold a lunchtime Town Hall to share PS 107's safety protocols with all of you. We met with our Safety Committee today, which is a team of parents and school staff, to review our own protocols today and make adjustments where needed. We will update you on all of these things on Tuesday, 5/31 at noon. A Zoom link will be forthcoming.
Third, there is a strong desire to do something as a community to speak out against gun violence and to support the victims. Our Community Outreach Team will be working on a plan and will be communicating this with all of you in the coming days. Please know that anything that we plan will be developmentally appropriate, and parents will be able to opt-in to participating.
Finally, I remain incredibly grateful to the entire PS 107 community for coming together at such a challenging moment. Our children are learning from us the real and beautiful meaning of the word "community."
