Dear PS107 Families,
I hope this message finds all of you healthy and well. Today is May 1st, and this is the end of our sixth week of remote learning. Though it is still imperfect, we have come a long way from where we began. It’s getting better every week as our comfort level and facility with technology improves.
Earlier this week Pamela sent you a letter from the Chancellor regarding the grading policy for the last term. To briefly summarize, we learned that final grades will employ a simple binary choice: meets standards or needs improvement. The Chancellor’s directive asks us to view each child holistically, and to take into consideration the first and second term grades. Most importantly, no child will fail any subject during remote learning. We are still getting clarification on some of the nuances of grading which will be shared with you in the next couple of weeks. Just as a reminder, students have flexibility on due dates for all assignments and yet we do expect at least a minimal amount of work to be submitted in all subjects, including cluster subjects. We recognize everyone’s home situation is different, and your child’s needs and ability to work independently vary as well. Your classroom and cluster teachers are more than happy to work with you to help you prioritize and streamline the work. Please reach out to them as needed.
To provide more leeway to complete work and time to visit cluster classes, we are now dubbing every Friday as “Fix, Finish & Fun Friday” when no new assignments will be posted. Classroom meetings or small group meetings will still take place, but students will otherwise be able to use their time to catch up on missed classroom or cluster subject assignments, or do enrichment activities in their Google Classroom.
We know the shift to remote learning has posed considerable challenges to you and your family amidst a much greater crisis in the world outside your door. Starting next week, Rinah, Pamela, Sarah and I will be hosting a Zoom “Family Check-In” to say hello and to offer some helpful advice for managing stress and expectations in this new landscape. The meetings are organized by grade level:
Pre-K & K: Wednesday May 6th, 7:30-8:30pm
1st/2nd: Thursday May 7th, 7:30-8:30pm
3rd/4th: Wednesday May 13th, 7:30-8:30pm
5th: Thursday May 14th, 7:30-8:30pm
Pamela will send a Konstella with the code and password in advance of the meeting. I hope you will join us.
The forecast is for a beautiful, warm weekend - a wonderful way to start the month. Please be safe outside and stay in touch with us. We miss you and your children terribly!
