School-wide Professional Lice Check: Mon, March 27
Fri, Mar 24 4:30pm

Hello PS 107 families,

On Monday, March 27, all PS 107 students will be checked for head lice by the Lady Bugs Team.

This service will cost $15 per student and will cover lice checks for the remainder of the year.  Please pay here. If you are unable to cover the cost for your child/children, please contact Nadia.

About Lice Checks
The PTA organizes school-wide lice checks as needed throughout the school year.  The DOE has a “no head lice” policy for all NYC public schools, but no longer a “no nit” policy. Students found to have live head lice will be sent home and not allowed to return until they are lice-free. Students with nits and no evidence of live head lice will not be excluded from school. However, as a courtesy to parents, if your child is found to have nits during one of the lice checks, you will be informed.

If Your Child Has Lice/Nits:

Using professional service has been highly effective if that makes sense for your family. Some options are:

  • Lady Bug Team (Ms Shayna Brown and family - 718.851.2844 or 347.581.9894
  • Lice Busters

The conditioner comb-out method (instructions reattached here) is also effective but must be done multiple times.

For more information about what you can do to check and prevent head lice, please see below:

STEP 1: CHECK YOUR CHILD

Lice can spread quickly within the classroom, so please take this time to check your child’s head.  If you don’t find anything, then check again in a week.  If you do find live bugs or nits, please continue with the following steps right away.

STEP 2: ALERT THE SCHOOL AND ALL FRIENDS

One of the most important steps in stopping the spread of lice is to make sure everyone who has been in close contact with your child recently knows about the situation and gets checked, to avoid spreading it back again. In addition to telling friends, please inform Nadia of the situation, so she can send a letter out to the class – don’t worry, no names are mentioned!

STEP 3: GET RID OF THE LICE

The lice and nits will have to be combed out of the child’s hair. Lice have become resistant to chemical treatments so please don’t use toxic chemicals on your child’s head.

  • Comb Out Instructions are attached or you can pick up a hard copy in the main office.
  • Purchase a NISSKA comb
  • Obtain a prescription from your pediatrician if you wish to use chemical treatments
  • If you prefer to see a professional you can contact the Lady Bugs who are the consultants for PS 107 and offer our families a 25% discount: Mrs. Shayna Brown at (718) 851-BUGG (2844) or (347) 581-9894

STEP 4: CLEAN AFFECTED AREAS

Make sure to clean all bedding, jackets, hats, backpacks, and anything else that has come in contact with your child’s head.  Couches, rugs, car seats, etc. should be vacuumed well.  Stuffed animals can be run through a dryer, vacuumed well or bagged up for 10-14 days. Brushes and hair accessories should be boiled and sterilized with rubbing alcohol.

STEP 5: GET RE-CHECKED AND CONTINUE TO COMB OUT

Once the lice have been combed out, your child will need to be re-checked by Nadia or Nurse Kara before being able to return to class. Continue to comb out your child’s hair once every 4 days until you see no more signs of bugs and nits. Be patient. This may take some time.
