Social-emotional screener for students - opt out available
Thu, Nov 18 3:50pm

Dear PS 107 Families,

As the school communicated to you recently via Operoo, next week classroom teachers at PS 107 will be completing the Devereaux Student Strengths Assessment (DESSA), a social-emotional screener for all students whose parents do not opt-out. The questionnaire is a 40 question screener for each student, and puts a strain on our teachers' schedules, which are already very full! While this tool can be quite important in helping to identify students who need further support in developing relationship skills, self-awareness, responsible decision-making, and optimistic thinking, it is our opinion that our school community excels in this very area and it's possible that this process may not be as important a tool at our school. Our guidance counselor is a well-known face throughout the school, along with our social worker, and our classrooms at all grade levels include social-emotional learning daily, all of which help in identifying and addressing students who may benefit from additional support with these skills.

If you have concerns about your child's social-emotional well-being, you may find the screener to be helpful. If not, you can opt-out of the DESSA by filling out this form before Nov 19th at 5 PM. If you would like your student's teacher to complete the DESSA screening tool for your student you do not need to do anything. No classroom time will be used for this assessment and it has no effect on a student's grades or report card.
