CARROLL KIDS Homework Help Guidelines and Agreement
Mon, Sep 30 7:08pm

This year we are asking parents of CARROLL KIDS Aftercare students to help us help their children regarding Homework Help. To ensure that your student(s) are getting the full advantage of this important feature of Carroll Kids aftercare, we’d like to give you an idea of what goes on in each grade, and make a few requests:

For ALL GRADES, we do on occasion have special activities that compete with Homework Help time. Please let us know if you will allow your child to skip Homework Help on these occasions. Otherwise, we will require that s/he complete homework BEFORE attending “specialty” classes.

Kindergarten

Homework at this level is still pretty basic, and not all classes are doing the same work. Our PS58 teachers generally provide activity worksheets, do a read aloud or engage students in simple word or numbers games.  Kindergarten has HW Help on Mondays and Wednesdays.

First Grade

All first graders are assigned weekly packets, therefore it is imperative that they have them in their backpacks every day that they are in Carroll Kids after care.  We often find that students have left packets at home and therefore can’t take full advantage of the time. We also suggest that they carry a book or two in their backpacks for independent reading. First grade has HW Help on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Second Grade

Students should have their homework folders in their backpacks every day that they are in after care.  They should also bring a book for those rare occasions when they have no homework or have already completed it.

Third Grade

Students should have their homework folders in their backpacks every day that they are in after care.  They should also bring a book for those rare occasions when they have no homework or have already completed it.

Fourth & Fifth Grades:

We highly recommend that your students do their homework during this period and take full advantage of our PS58 teacher time.  We sometimes hear from students that their parents don’t require them to do homework and school and prefer to do it with them at home. With math in particular, we recommend completing the work at school with teacher input because parents aren’t always up on the methods being introduced. Feel free to go over the work with your student at home, but it’s best not to interfere with strategies being learned.

Second Grade - Fifth Grade have HW Help Mondays-Thursdays and ½ hour on Fridays.

If you have any particular concerns or requests regarding Homework Help, don’t hesitate to contact us.
