We know that you have all heard that school will be in session this Thursday and Friday, as well as the week of April 13th. We understand that this announcement has been met with mixed emotions. Our staff continues to adapt our program as things change to try to find a balance between meeting the needs of our students and understanding that each family is dealing with very unique circumstances that make remote learning a challenge at best.
Each one of our grades, Pre-K through 5th, will be sending out a modified plan for students to follow on Thursday and Friday of this week. We fully understand that these days are religious holidays and many of you will be celebrating in your home with your families. With this in mind, we do not expect work to be turned in and we will not be assigning any new work.
There will be a suggested structure for each day with recommendations for enrichment activities.
For the week of April 13th, each grade will send a modified plan as well. The activities that the teachers have selected are designed to provide students with some time away from screens. There will be service learning components and opportunity for independent learning as well.
Updates on attendance: you will be receiving a message from your child’s classroom with information about attendance requirements for each day. Every class has a system for a daily check-in which will be used for attendance purposes. While the Department of Education is requiring us to take attendance, we understand the need to be flexible for our students and families. Please do not hesitate to reach out to us with questions or concerns. As previously shared, no child will be penalized in any way for attendance.
The mayor has announced that New York City schools will be closed until April 29th. The PS 58 staff recognizes that our current crisis is fluid and ever evolving. We continue to assess our work and look ahead not only in increments of days but also weeks and months to plan. We know you have many questions about the remainder of the year. We do too. As we get answers to our questions we will share additional information with all of you.
