Dear Redwood Heights Families
After yesterdays announcement that Derek Chauvin was found guilty, I needed a moment to decompress from all the busyness of reopening. When I got home, I read a few articles and perused headlines about the case and the verdict. Like many of you I was flooded with a plethora of emotions. What I want to highlight are the children that testified during this trial. In particular, Darnella Frazier, who was 17 years old when she filmed the video of George Floyd's arrest. She is in the picture below, third person from the right.
Her decision to go to the neighborhood store with her 9 year old cousin to buy some snacks, led them to bear witness to the horrific death of George Floyd that ignited international protests over racism and police abuse. Darnella had the presence of mind, courage and bravery to film the incident even when police officers were telling her to stop. Had it not been for her, we may not have gotten the whole truth. Since this incident she has suffered from anxiety. I hope that she will continue to be wrapped in love by a supportive network of family and friends. I am in awe of her bravery.
