Update 04-30-25
OEA and OUSD have reached a tentative agreement, and the strike has been called off. Thank you all for your support, patience, and understanding this week as we navigated these waters!
Update 04-29-25
The Oakland Education Association (OEA) has given official notice that they will strike on Thursday. There is a slight chance they will call off the strike after negotiations tomorrow (Wednesday), and I will update this post if anything changes. As of this update, please plan for a Thursday strike.
==========================
Hello, RHS Community,
Following up on our note in last week’s Room Parent memo, the Oakland Education Association (OEA) has voted to authorize their union president to declare a one-day strike this Thursday, May 1, if they deem it necessary. As of this message, it looks likely that the strike will happen, and we will keep folks posted as we learn more.
A one-day strike will mean that the OUSD school buildings will be open, but that teachers will not be in their classrooms. They will be on strike outside the buildings in support of their union.
If they strike, your planning for that day might include finding alternative care options for your children. In previous strikes, all student absences have been excused, and we assume the same policy will apply this time.
You can read more about the situation in this Oaklandside article (which includes a statement from OUSD) and this PBS article. The OEA has shared this FAQ and this video.
Please feel free to email us at pta@redwoodheightspta.org if you have any questions, and we will do our best to answer them.
All our best,
Anna Heath and Vi Lê
PTA President and Executive Vice President
