Hi, everyone,
We hope you had some downtime this weekend and a moment to enjoy the sunshine. It sounds like OUSD (aka the district) and OEA (aka the union) made some progress in their negotiations today (they apparently felt the sun too). There's still a long way to go, but we welcome any signs of a way through, no matter how modest.
As we last wrote, the strike will continue Monday, May 8. Here are the latest updates:
- Our RHS community is invited to dance it out on the picket line at RHS tomorrow (Monday) at 8:30am as the OUSD and OEA teams return to the negotiating table. Come cheer both teams on. We want progress this week!
- Solidarity/Strike School at First Covenant Church continues Monday, thanks to RHS parent (and pastor!) Sarah Henry. For more information and to sign up your child, read Tiffany's update here. Also, the school will only be possible if we have volunteers! If you can spare a few hours, please consider signing up.
- Our teachers have written a new community letter, and we encourage you to read it here.
- Librarian extraordinaire Mr. Jeff will be at RHS until 10am before going to the Dimond Branch of the Oakland Public Library. Mr. Jeff will have free comics to give away. First come, first served!
Last, but not least, if you're interested in understanding the circumstances surrounding this strike, Jill Tucker is the longtime education reporter for the San Francisco Chronicle, and this article is the most balanced, thorough explanation I've seen of the issues so far. (If you've seen other articles you like, please let me know at admin@redwoodheightspta.org!)
Thank you all again for your patience with all the communications. Please don't hesitate to reach out over email or in Konstella if you have any specific concerns or questions, and we'll have another update for you tomorrow evening.
Take good care,
Anna & Tiffany
