Principal’s Message

As we embark on this new school year, I ask all of you to remember that safety is a shared responsibility. We must work together as a community to establish and maintain a safe environment for the children on our campus. Students walk, bike, scoot, and drive to and from RWSE every morning and afternoon. We MUST be a team to promote the wellbeing and safety of ALL of our children.

Everyone in our community is expected to know and follow the transportation guidelines documented in this safety message. (This includes people who will be escorting your child on campus, such as babysitters and grandparents.) There have been “close calls” in the past where little ones were in danger and nearly hit in our crosswalks. This is serious and extremely dangerous.

It takes a village and the safety of children must be everyone’s priority!

In case you missed it, please review information sent from Michael Milliken about the new lunch vendor, FAQs for student info, and volunteer information.

Class Assignments and Using Konstella
Class assignment links were sent from BRSSD on Saturday, 8/18.  You can also search for your child's class assignment at http://lookup.brssd.org with their Student ID # (sent during registration).  If you have questions, call the front office at 650-802-8060 or email Nicky Adam.
In Konstella, you'll need to assign yourself to the appropriate classroom, and then everyone can begin to see the information of their classmates.  Konstella is our school-wide communication method/app, and we try to keep it all consolidated and not to overwhelm families with messages.

Reminders for Commute Safety
As everyone knows, parking is limited at RWSE, and we will all be adjusting to the new schedule.  Families are encouraged to bike and walk to and from school.  If you must drive, please allow extra time to arrive, go through to the drop off / valet area, and stop for any and all pedestrians, cyclists and volunteers.  Please use extra caution and obey all traffic rules.
We want all families to stay safe on your route to and from campus. Please remember our safe routes to school and follow proper drop-off procedures:  do not drop off in the parking lot unless you find a non-reserved parking space, do not double park, park in the red, handicapped or drop off zone.  Redwood City Police Department will be on site periodically to assist with safety.
Thank you for your cooperation!

Safety Volunteers Needed
To assist with a smooth commute, we need helpers! Please sign up on Konstella for a committee and then click UPDATE link to select volunteer shifts when you can help.

Crosswalk Volunteers - Parents in this committee are volunteers that work crosswalk duty every morning (8-8:30am) in front of the school. Parents should go to the office and proceed to the Health Room to find an orange vest that they should always wear during their shift.

5th Grade Valet Assistants - Valet service is offered every school morning at our Drop Off Only curb. 5th Grade students volunteer for weekly shifts and stand along the curb to help students out of their cars. Shifts are 8 to 8:20am every school morning, and 6 students per morning are needed.

Safe Routes to School - This program is district wide program to change community behavior, attitudes, and social norms to make it safer for children in grades K-8 to walk and bike to school.   It also involves safety at school.  The committee chair, Shannon Moon, will work closely with the Principal to determine programs to support and implement that can educate our students and our community about transportation safety in and around the school.

Lunch Recess Yard Duty Volunteers - This committee is comprised of volunteer parents that come to campus each lunch recess period to monitor the student activities. This committee works closely with the Principal to ensure safety and supervision at lunch time every day of the week, except Wednesdays.

Welcome Back to School Social Event
The event will be Tuesday August 21st from 4-6pm on the school playground. We will have a Jumpy House, free Face Painting, music by DJ Alex, the Redwood City Fire Department Truck, and more!! It will be a great time to come to school, say hello to friends, and enjoy some outdoor time before school begins.
