PTA President's Message

Dear Parents of Redwood Shores Elementary School Students,

I hope you all had a great first full month of school, and the students have settled into their routines! We had an eventful September, starting with a successful first fundraising event for PTA, Write-a-Check, raising ~$70K–100% of goal for this event. Thank you to EVERYONE for your generous support. We look forward to the Walk-a-Thon in October with a fundraising goal of $24K to round out the fundraising activities for PTA for the year. Since the school began seven years ago, we have grown from 275 students to its current capacity of 550 students. In prior years, PTA has been managing growth while this year we are fortunate to be able to start focusing on providing programs and opportunities that more mature schools within the district have been able to provide including enrichment programs and teacher professional development. The increase in ask this year gets us to an average for the district, which enables us to support these wonderful programs.

I am super thankful to those parents who help plan events as it takes much effort and time. Without them, our wonderful community would not have the opportunity to come together. Thank you so much to Jihan Bayyari for planning Bike Night where many families came to bike around campus and get their bikes fixed up by the bike mechanics. Also, thank you to Anna Slavitt for organizing the school’s first Walk-n-Roll Wednesday. We’re looking forward to future events! I also want to extend a special thank you to Kostub Deshmukh for starting the Math Olympiad Club, our first enrichment program to get off the ground. The club is full with a lengthy wait list!

In addition to fun and community, we had a few sessions of more business related activities. I hope those who came to the coffee chats with the Principal and the first PTA General Association Meeting found them useful, informative and encouraging. At the coffee chats, we learned much about what’s important to you and answered some of your questions. Please feel free to let me know what you thought and if future coffee chats would be helpful.

Below, you will find important PTA information. Happy October! I can’t believe it’s October already!

Sincerely,
Sandy Nelson
RSES PTA President

PTA Announcements

Enrichment Programs (We have 1 off the ground!)
Awesome parents are working hard to get clubs going, please see below. The PTA welcomes additional submissions, so don’t be shy! If you have a particular skill or interest that you would like to share with the kids, please contact Sandy to discuss requirements and level of support. Here are documents to help you decide whether this is for you: checklist and proposal. Please consider participating in this as it would greatly benefit the kids and make you feel pretty good too!

Robotics
If you are interested in helping, contact Sucharita to lend your support. The team will meet Mondays at 4:15-5:15pm. More information will be available and sign ups will begin once all details are ironed out, so stay tuned.

Running Club
Christy Meier has been hard at work setting up a before school Running Club. Kickoff will be the week after the Walk-a-Thon and the club will meet every Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 7:45-8:10am. We need 2 parents minimum at each session, and 1 parent for every 11 students participating. If you are able to help or have questions, please contact Christy.

Newspaper Club
Narkees Rosenberg is really excited and has many ideas on an after school Newspaper Club she is working to start. She will need help from at least one other parent to run the club. If you have any writing experience or are tech savvy enough to manage the backend of the website; i.e. uploading the articles and pictures, please contact Narkees.

Math Club
We had 40+ 4th and 5th graders interested in the Math Olympiad Club with a limit of 30 students. Our kids love math! If you also love math and would like to start another Math Olympiad Club, you can share the materials and lesson plans from Kostub. If you’d like to start a math for fun club, the students (all grades) would likely love it as much. We’re reaching out to our wonderful parents to see if we can support this interest in math. Please contact Sandy if you’d like to help out!

Enrichment Chair
As things heat up with Enrichment Clubs, we are in need of someone to manage the process of helping the clubs get set up. Are you organized and would love to see these opportunities for our kids grow? Please contact Sandy to discuss the requirements for the Enrichment Chair.

Committee Chairs
If you would like to help out and don’t know what to do, please take a look at the Committees on Konstella that still need chairs. Here are a few:

  • Opening Doors PTA Liaison
  • Volunteer Appreciation
  • Room Parents
  • Lunch Recess Yard Duty
  • Valet (5th grade)
  • Staff Appreciation
  • Art-in-Action Docent

Konstella
95% of our school’s families are registered in Konstella! Hopefully you have already benefitted from its many capabilities and functionality. It houses the school directory, committee information, announcements on school happenings whether it be PTA, class or school related, calendar, sign-ups for events, social groups and newly added, Spirit Wear orders. Can it get even better? Yes! With time, we will use even more of the functionality. Keep an eye out for these weekly email announcements!

If you notice your friend’s child or your child’s classmate is not on Konstella, please show them how great this new tool is, and urge them to sign up at www.Konstella.com.

Box Tops
It’s time to turn in the Box Tops you’ve been collecting all summer. We are rolling out our first contest of the year to see which classroom will bring in the most Box Tops. The winning class will receive a fun prize for each student.

Each Box Top is worth 10¢ for our school. Look for the Box Tops on products, check the expiration dates, clip them along the perforated lines and send them to school with your children. There's a collection bag in all the classrooms. For a list of participating products, please go to www.boxtops4education.com. The contest ends on Halloween (October 31).

Assemblies
The assemblies are on the Konstella calendar as an FYI for parents. Our wonderful PTA Assemblies Chair, Jennifer Hom, and PTA Board Liaison, Juliette Russell, have been diligently working on relevant, fun and educational PTA sponsored assemblies for the students. Hopefully your child will come home excited to talk about what they learned at these assemblies.

The Walk-a-Thon is Coming
Join us on Sunday, October 22nd for a fun filled afternoon with family and friends at our annual Walk-a-Thon / Carnival. The PTA's final fundraiser of the year, the Walk-a-Thon is a great opportunity to spend the afternoon with our school community, while cheering on our kids as they walk to benefit the RWSE PTA. During the Walk-a-Thon children will be walking laps around the school campus with music, activities, and food to keep everyone entertained. After the walking is done, the fun keeps going with a carnival filled with games and prizes.

Look for event and registration details coming home this week in Friday folders!
