President's Message
Dear Parents,
Our last long vacation for the year has passed and we’re now in the home stretch. The students are gearing up for testing, so we threw in a party. Why not? I hope you all had a great time at the Luau on Friday. Thank you Meichiel Weiss and Nancy Simmons for the hours of work you put into making this happen. Also, thank you to DJ Alex Agan for spinning feet-moving music.
We have a busy 1.5 months to go and we can use all the help we can get to end the year with a bang! So take a deep breath, and let’s do it! We have the last day to Customize Yearbook Pages this Tuesday 4/30, PTA General Meeting on Friday 5/3 (8:30am/Library), Staff Appreciation Week starting May 6th, Volunteer Appreciation Event on 5/21, Open House 5/23, Last PTA General Meeting on 5/31 (8:30am/Library), Discovery Day on 6/5, Ice Cream Social on 6/10, Last Day of School on 6/12.  For those with sign ups sheets, I’ve included the links above.
While we have a slate for next year’s PTA Exec Board, it’s never too early to think about the following year, particularly for parents in the younger grades who will be around for a while longer. The role I would like to highlight in this issue is Executive Vice President. Our EVP this year is Jen Vitug and she also held the role of Council Rep where she is the Parliamentarian, so she has 2 jobs this year. The EVP position is the catch-all for everything that is not part of anyone else’s duties (official or unofficial). She's been my go-to for everything I have not been able to do as President. This is the role for you if you are happy with ambiguity and are ready to do whatever it takes (big or small) to help make an impact at our school. Ideally, this role leads to the President role, but it’s not required. Thank you so much Jen for being my right hand woman this year. I couldn’t have done it without you stepping in every time I asked. Your dedication has been tremendous, and I look forward to your leadership next year as PTA President!
PTA Board is not the only place we have great involvement from the parent community. We began Enrichment Clubs last year, and it’s once again been a great success and source of additional learning for our students. I’m so grateful to the parents who take valuable time in their already super busy lives to dedicate to our kids on a weekly basis to make these opportunities possible. Thank you Ora Grinberg for chairing Enrichment Clubs by coordinating sign ups, budgets, and proposals. Thank you to the leads: Ora Grinberg (Crazy 8s Math), Scott Cline (Math Olympiad), Sucharita Puli (Robotics), Mel Lee (Robotics), Christy Meier and Jason Erpenbeck (Running), Narkees Rosenberg (Newspaper), Neeti Sharma (Yoga), along with all the co-leads and helpers in these clubs. Our students are truly lucky to have these opportunities thanks to you all!
It’s that time of the year to prepare for next year. Ms. Amsler sent a request last week for $50 donation for supplies, and we’ve only raised $1,700 thus far. That’s less than 10% of our teachers’ need. We would love for the kids to have the basic necessities e.g. pencils, glue sticks, notebooks, etc. from the get go and we need to order in June, so we need your help. Please use Konstella to donate, or if you’d like to pay by cash or check payable to Redwood Shores Elementary School, hand it into Nicky in the office. Thank you so much for your support!
As stated above, our next PTA Meeting is Friday, May 3rd in the Library at 8:30am. Please come to discuss fundraising models for our district PTAs and SchoolForce. We’d love to get as many perspectives as possible as we move to a more sustainable fundraising model. Juicy stuff right?! Go Seals!
Sandy Nelson, PTA President

PTA Announcements

We’d like to thank Meichiel Weiss for all her hard work putting together the Family Dinner Dance! It was such a fun event and everyone enjoyed dancing, eating, and visiting. It was a wonderful, fun-filled evening! A big thank you to our fabulous DJ Alex Agan, MC Jeff Weiss, and all the volunteers who made this event possible.
Alicia Westra, PTA VP of Events

Bring the whole family and enjoy "Celebrate Science" with Mad Science!

Staff Appreciation Week is Coming!
(Teachers, STOP READING! We want to surprise you but need to spread the word.)
It’s that time of year when we show the staff at our amazing school just how much we appreciate them! The theme for this year is “Mahalo for All That You Do!”.
Next week starting Monday, May 6 we will shower them with donated goodies for breakfast and snacks, and we will also ask for parent volunteers to supervise recesses so the teachers can take a much needed break. WE NEED YOUR HELP! Click here to sign up if you can bring something for them to enjoy or if you have a few minutes to spare during the day to assist on the blacktop.

Our activities for the week include:
Monday, May 6: bring a flower for your teacher

Tuesday, May 7: say "thank you" or "mahalo" to your teacher
Wednesday, May 8: return "Couldn't Have Picked A Better Teacher" sheet
Thursday, May 9: wear your teacher's favorite color
Friday, May 10: do something to help your teacher
Throughout the week students will have the opportunity to show appreciation for teachers past and present by writing a note on the poster on each teacher’s door.
Kind regards, Yumi Clevenger and Monica Brillantes, Staff Appreciation Chairs

Looking for 2019-2020 AiA Volunteer Coordinators
The Redwood Shores Elementary Art in Action (AiA) committee needs volunteer coordinators to co-lead this program for the next school year. AiA leads coordinate with the Art in Action organization (in Menlo Park) on subscription licenses and related activities. At school, the AiA co-chairs identify volunteer docents for each classroom, manage the budget and supplies, and organize the annual art show at the school open house.  The role takes a couple hours a month, with a few extra hours needed at the beginning and end of the year. Ideally 2-3 coordinators is recommended to share responsibilities. There will be an opportunity to transition from the current AiA coordinator.
Each year the school's Kindergarten, 1st, 4th, and 5th grade classrooms are exposed to a variety of artists, concepts, and mediums through this high-quality visual art curriculum, and parent volunteers are key to its success. If you enjoy interacting with the school community, are good at organizing, or have an interest in art this may be a good opportunity to get involved. Art experience is a plus but not necessary.  If interested, contact Peggy Chiu.
