Yard & Playground Supervision
When you pick up your child from school, please be aware that the field and blacktop areas are dedicated for PE and other activities until 3pm. Upper grade teachers are leading instruction outside between 2:35 & 3 and may need to ask you to leave.
Any student playing outside school hours on campus requires supervision. Please do not allow your children to play on play structures without your ACTIVE supervision. Here are some school expectations regarding the play structure:

  • Walking on the tanbark; no fast chase games on the structure or around the metal bars
  • Head’s up on the hanging bars: no upside down spins, heads dangling, or climbing on top of the bars
  • RWSE equipment is for school time. If your children are hiding materials like balls around campus, please encourage them to honestly put them away at the end of recess. Thank you in advance for your assistance & cooperation.

Parking, Traffic and Safety Reminder
Over the past two weeks on campus I have watched:

  • People look at their cell phone while driving up to the valet drop-off where our 5th grade leaders stand and volunteer
  • People repeatedly park in red zones and spaces for disabled individuals
  • People use harsh language with one another regarding a parking space
  • People pull into a staff spot while a teacher is right behind them trying to park and get to their classroom on-time

Please know that I understand it can be very stressful to get to school on-time and then have to manage the parking situation. However, I do ask everyone to remember we are a community working together to ensure the safety of our students. Please do NOT drive on campus while texting or checking your cell phone. Please refrain from parking in already-designated spaces. Finally, please go SLOW and keep your eyes out for pedestrians.

Appreciations
As always at Redwood Shores Elementary, many classes are engaged in hands-on learning. 1st grade Kids Town, 4th & 5th grades Pie Day, and Kindergarten Leprechaun Traps are just a few things that pop in my mind right now. Thank you to the teachers and all of our community members that support our students with these exciting learning experiences.
Thank you to all of the parents and families that have juggled the minimum day schedule and attended your children’s conferences. This change of routine can be difficult for families, and I thank you for your flexibility and dedication to your student’s education.

Safe Routes to School Parent Survey:
Thank you for taking the time to complete this survey. Your feedback allows us to adjust Safe Routes to School (SRTS) education and encouragement program features to best meet the needs of each individual school.  Your feedback will also be shared with decision makers throughout the county who can address infrastructure issues regarding safe walking and biking. This survey will take approximately 5 minutes to complete and will close 3/29.

Ralston PTA's Parent Education Event -- Mark Your Calendar!
Join us for an informative evening with guest speaker, Mary Hofstedt, from Challenge Success! Mary will be delivering the "Well-Balanced Student" presentation on Monday, March 25, 2019 from 6:30–8pm in the MUR.
This event is open to all members of our BRSSD parent community.
Summary of presentation:  When we are too focused on grades and performance, we deny our children time and energy they need to tackle the demanding work of growing up. In this presentation, you'll learn how you can establish a healthier home environment, reduce academic stress without sacrificing achievement and increase your children's resilience, creativity, and well being.
