Superintendent's Message
Last week, I shared that Trustees Tashjian and Phan resigned from their board positions effective June 19, 2019. We plan to celebrate their leadership and service to the community at their last board meeting on June 6, 2019 at 6:15pm. You're welcome to stop by.
At the 5/16 meeting, the Board decided to use the provisional appointment process to replace Trustees Tashjian and Phan. Eligible residents of the Belmont-Redwood Shores School District who are interested in submitting their name for an appointment to the Board may do so by June 3 via this application, which is also posted on the BRSSD homepage. The Board will review applications at its meeting on June 6. Candidate interviews will be conducted in public at a special board meeting on June 17. The two finalists are expected to be voted into office at the June 20 board meeting.
Additionally, the Board welcomes community input regarding what candidate qualities or factors the Board should keep in mind during the selection process. Such input, as well as letters of support for individual candidates, can be emailed directly to the Board at board@brssd.org. Individuals who are considering applying to be a Trustee are welcome to contact board members to learn more about the duties and time commitments. However, in the interest of fairness and transparency, the Board asks that advocacy on behalf of candidates be limited to public comment at board meetings, email, and written correspondence.

PTA President’s Message
Dear Parents,
The staff felt very appreciated by all the goodies and time they got last week. Thank you to Yumi Cleavenger and Monica Brillantes for putting together such a fun Luau themed display and thank you to everyone who donated food, drinks and time to help appreciate our wonderful staff at RSE!
This past Wednesday was our last Walk-N-Roll. I hope you've enjoyed celebrating the benefits of walking and rolling to school along with the fun prizes. Thank you Anna Slavitt for coordinating the Walk-N-Roll activities for the school year!
It truly takes a community to come together to make our school the best place that it can be to learn and connect. Without all the tireless volunteers, we cannot do what we do. With appreciation in our hearts, we would like to celebrate what we have with the Volunteer Appreciation Event on Tuesday, May 21st, directly after the Volunteer Breakfast hosted by the staff. We hope to see you awe-inspiring volunteers there.
We will have our last PTA General Association meeting on 5/31 (8:30am Library). Please be sure to come learn about what we will be funding next year as well as other business. There will be breakfast and coffee, so come enjoy!
As we round out the year, we still have several events coming up including Open House on 5/23, Discovery Day on 6/5, Ice Cream Social on 6/10 (sign up list to come), and Last day of School/Promotion on 6/12.
Even though we have a slate for next year’s PTA Exec Board, it’s never too early to think about the following year, particularly for parents in the younger grades who will be around for a while longer. The role on the team I would like to highlight in this issue is Auditor.  Our Auditor this year is Jessica Tang. The Auditor is very detail oriented and can follow audit rules. The Auditor ensures that we meet the audit guidelines for PTA financials. Jessica actually went through each reimbursement document, every bank statement, and every piece of financial information.  The Treasurer said Jessica was very detailed. If details are what you love, this is the job for you! Thank you Jessica for being our compliance officer this year and thank you for our clean first half audit. We look forward to a clean second half audit in the Fall.
The request for $50 donation for supplies came out a few weeks ago. Thank you to those who have donated already! We would love for all students to have the basic necessities e.g. pencils, glue sticks, notebooks, etc. from the get go and we need to order in June, so we need your help. Please donate in Konstella or if you’d like to pay by cash or check made out to Redwood Shores Elementary School, hand it to Nicky in the office. Thank you so much for your support! This is our progress to date

Box Top Collection
Please turn in the Box Tops you’ve been collecting all year round. There's a collection bag in all the classrooms. We will be picking them up this Friday!
Each Box Top is worth 10¢ for our school. Look for the Box Tops on products, check the expiration dates, clip them and submit them. Click here for a list of participating products.

Good News! It's still not too late to order a yearbook!
If you didn't get around to ordering a yearbook before the general deadline, not all is lost! You can still order one (but it won't include custom pages)--just pay shipping and it will be delivered to the school in time for distribution. BUT, the deadline to order for delivery to school is May 27th. Any orders made after the 27th will be shipped directly to your home address (no autographs boohoo!).

Urban Gardening with a Busy Schedule
Many of us living in Redwood Shores have limited space for a garden and limited time to maintain one. The knowledge, excitement, and skills in harvesting what we grow are not passing down to our kids. The PTA would like to start an enrichment program to bring this fun activity back. The strategy is have low maintenance garden planters on campus for our kids to plant, grow, nurture, and harvest what they grow. Learn about sub irrigation planters; grow plants that are natural pest controls; design landscape to minimize snails and slugs. Other activities may be compost and worm farms. Develop your kids green thumb. The PTA seeks volunteer/co-chairs to build planter boxes, teach gardening principles and plant maintenance. This enrichment club WILL NOT happen without your help - we need at least TWO other parent volunteer/co-chairs.  For more information, contact Mel Lee in Konstella.

Parents and community members who would like to review and give input on the science materials currently being tested in classrooms are invited to do so at the District Office (2960 Hallmark Drive) on Tuesday, May 28, from 4:30 to 6:30pm.
