Timing Info and Reminders for Middle School Camping Trip – Mon, 9/24 – Tues, 9/25

The middle school camping trip is coming up on Monday, September 24 – Tuesday, September 25. Please take a few minutes to read the information below:

What to Bring
  • Students should bring a disposable sack lunch for the first day that they will eat once they arrive at camp. Denali will provide a sack lunch for any student that qualifies for free or reduced-price lunch.
  • We will be short on space in cars, so please have your child pack lightly because they may need to carry some of their gear on their laps in the car.

  • Meds should be provided to the Summit Denali office before the camping trip in the original prescription containers (no loose pills!) in a ziplock bag labeled with your child’s name along with the camping medication authorization. Medication cannot be stored in students’ bags during the trip except for inhalers and for items such as EpiPens which are life-threatening if not kept close to the student.
Cell Phones
  • We have decided that we are going to allow students to bring their cell phones on the camping trip and keep them in their bag or tent. However, we highly recommend that students leave them at home, as expensive devices often get lost, broken, or dirty on these trips. If you choose to send your child with a phone, please reiterate to them the importance of keeping it somewhere safe and focusing on face-to-face interactions with their classmates and teachers!
Student Not Attending
  • We encourage ALL students to attend the trip, but those opting out have the option of a supervised PLT day at our high school. The address is 1133 W. Washington Ave. Sunnyvale. Please call the front desk at 669-721-2646 if you are instead choosing to keep your student at home on Monday and Tuesday.
Packing List
  • A bag lunch for Tuesday (Though we’ll have school bag lunches available, too!)
  • Sleeping bag or lots of blankets
  • Flashlight
  • Water bottle
  • Change of clothes
  • Comfortable clothing and walking shoes that you can get dirty and move in
  • Warm jacket / sweatshirt
  • Toothbrush, toothpaste, soap and towel (there will be sinks to wash up but no showers)
  • Sunblock/bug repellent
  • Other toiletries (deodorant, please!)
  • Baby wipes are super useful for cleaning off the dirt and dust!

Things to leave at home

  • Anything that would get damaged like electronics
  • Hair dryers/curling irons/etc
  • Extra food (raccoons! so many raccoons!)
  • Valuables
  • Nice clothes
  • Anything that is inappropriate for school
  • As a reminder, if you are planning to drive, you must turn in a copy of your driver’s license, vehicle registration, and proof of insurance.
  • If you are staying overnight, we must have a LiveScan and TB test on file. Another option is to stay at a nearby hotel in Boulder Creek!
  • Questions about volunteer paperwork? Please don’t hesitate to reach out to Ms. Bilisoly or Ms. Gutierrez!

High School Expeditions Starting October 1

The first round of Expeditions is coming up in just a few weeks (Oct 1-12)! We have some exciting course offerings this year, such as Empowerment through Creative Writing, Video Game Programming, Local Wilderness, Entrepreneurship, and Stage Combat (led by former Denali teacher, Mr. Brown!). Through expeditions, students also complete at least one Visual/Performing Arts course as a graduation requirement. Detailed course descriptions can be found in the Expeditions Course Catalog.

We try our best to place students in the courses that they want to take. In order to do so, we have them fill out a course preference survey, which can be found here: Please remind your student to fill out the survey ASAP!

Please reach out to Mr. Bock, Ms. Bilisoly, Ms. Zado, or your student’s mentor if you have any questions!

Reminder: Donate to Denali!

We are excited to kick off our 2018-19 annual donation campaign, Denali Gives! Our fundraising goal this year is to raise $200,000 to support all of the individual activities that you might normally donate to support, like the annual camping trips, spring study trips or 8th grade promotion as well classroom materials for our teachers, scholarships for extracurricular activities, and more.

As many of you know, California public schools have faced funding shortfalls for decades now and annual per-pupil funding in California’s public schools is significantly lower than the national average. Our faculty work tremendously hard to do more with with less, and we’re incredibly proud of and grateful for the work that our teachers do. Your contributions will have a direct impact on Denali teachers and students.

We understand that each family is able to give in different ways or different amounts, and we truly appreciate every single donation – no matter the size. Some families are able to give more than our ask, and we will need that additional support in order to meet our goal. No student at Denali will ever be denied access to any part of our program because of their family’s financial status. Your tax-deductible donation of $500 per student will enable us to meet our goal!

All donations to Denali are tax deductible, and a thank you letter and donation receipt will be sent to families after their donation. Donations can be made online directly to Denali or via cash or check at the front desk or mailed to school. THANK YOU!

Click here to see how corporate matching can double or triple your donation!

Space for Transfer Enrollment @ Denali, 2018-19 school year

We NEED your help. Summit Denali has additional spaces for enrollment in grades 6-11. Our budget depends on full enrollment, and WE NEED YOUR HELP to increase enrollment.

We want to be sure that every family who wants a rigorous, college-prep education for their students has an opportunity to attend Denali. Having full grade levels builds a strong Denali community and provides the Summit opportunity to a greater number of young people.

Do you know another family with children in grades 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 or 11?

  • Families you went to elementary or middle school with?
  • Families from sports leagues, community groups, religious groups?
  • Families in your neighborhood?

Please help us spread the word! Families can see more information at

You can have them reach out to Kevin directly at, call the front desk at (669)721-2646, or enroll at

If you refer a family who enrolls, you’ll get a free Denali hoodie sweatshirt!

Some broad areas of interest from students currently looking for internships include: environment-focused work, the tech industry, and sports and fitness!
