Message from the KidsFirst President
Hello Sunset View Community,
It never fails - I panic at the start of every summer wondering how in the world I'm going to fill 10 weeks worth of time for my active kid! And then suddenly, with only one week left before school starts, I can't believe summer has already come to an end! I hope each and every one of you were able to enjoy special family time at some point over the summer break and that you and your kids are excited for an IN-PERSON, FULL SCHEDULE, return next Monday! I'm excited (and a bit nervous) about taking on the role of KidsFirst President this year. Especially with having big shoes to fill following Tori Traino's two years in the role. This will be my family's 5th year at the school and look forward to meeting those of you I may not know.
18 months ago we left school thinking it would only be a matter of weeks before "COVID was gone" and our kids would be back in the classrooms. None of us could have imagined what ultimately transpired and I'm sure many of you agree that we never want our children to experience something like the last year and half again. As you read in Principal O'Connor's update linked above (if you didn't read it, please do), there will be some restrictions in place as we start the school year. Please know that the KidsFirst Board is dedicated to ensuring we are able to bring back funded programming that has always made our school a special place. Some of these things will slowly be brought back as Principal O'Connor (and SDUSD policy) advises us they can and others will be phased in as we raise funds through our Annual Giving campaign which will launch next month. Now more than ever, we also welcome and wish to embrace new ideas and new ways to approach programming and events for the students of Sunset View. If ever there was a time to 'mix things up', it is now. If you have ideas you wish to share for enhancing this school year, please don't hesitate to reach out to me or your respective grade level parent representative. More details regarding what the KidsFirst Board intends to fund this school year will be provided as we kick off our Annual Giving campaign in a few weeks.
Last year we added grade level representatives to the KidsFirst Board as a way to ensure all grade levels have a voice on the board. In addition to reaching out to me or other members of the board, please reach out to your grade level parent rep if grade level questions or concerns arise. The public is welcome to attend all KidsFirst Board meetings (schedule To Be Announced soon!) and we encourage parents to attend if they're eager to get involved.
- TK/K Rep - Kim Howard
- 1st Grade Rep - Courtney Johnson
- 2nd Grade Rep - Jessica Bunster
- 3rd Grade Rep - Charles Wheeler
- 4th Grade Rep - George Dimou
For those of you new to Sunset View, we welcome you to our special school and hope you grow to love our "Whale of a School" as much as those of us who have been at the school for multiple years. There will be a lot of information thrown at you over the course of the next few weeks. We will do our best to ensure our communications are clear and that you and your child/children feel you're in the right place as you join our community.
Enjoy the last week of summer and please don't hesitate to communicate with members of the KidsFirst Board via Konstella or email@example.com if you have any questions or concerns.
-Courtney Burnett, KidsFirst President

Before & After School Care
Before and after school care is available (at a charge) through SAY San Diego. Morning coverage is available from 7am to 9am. Afternoon coverage is available from 3:35pm to 6pm (12:45pm to 6pm Thursday). Information on registering can be found HERE. If you have questions regarding the program, you can send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org.
KidsFirst Volunteer Opportunities
We hope there will be many opportunities to volunteer (on-site) this year and will update the parent community as we are allowed to plan events our students and community have grown to love over the years. We do have a few positions we'd love to fill now as we kick off the new year.
Unlike many schools, Sunset View Elementary does not publish a School Supply List of items children should have at the start of school. Instead, with support of KidsFirst, Sunset View purchases classroom supplies for the entire school based on teacher requests and needs. Students should come to school on August 30th with a water bottle, snack, and lunch (unless getting from the cafeteria for Grades 1-4). TK & Kinder students also need a spare set of clothes sealed in a plastic zippered bag stored in their backpack.
If teachers identify supply needs specific to their classroom, parents will be notified via classroom communication channels.
School opens in ONE week! With the start of the new school year, we're seeking Corporate Sponsors to allow local businesses to support KidsFirst funded programs while gaining exposure in our local Point Loma community throughout the 2021-2022 school year. Please find details regarding the sponsorship levels HERE and make a donation HERE. Please note that we've updated the sponsorship levels this year and are including all sponsors donating at least $350 on our Jog-A-Thon t-shirts which will be distributed to approximately 450 students and teachers. For any questions regarding Corporate Sponsorships, please contact Jill Bruckart.
