Please take a moment to read about our (awesome) parent candidates running for the open School Leadership Team position. You'll also find their info hanging in the hall outside the main office and behind the security desk at the ES entrance.
Elections will take place on Tuesday, October 10.
Here are the 4 candidates in alphabetical order:
SLT Candidate: Frances Anderson
Hi, my name is Frances Anderson and I appreciate your consideration of me as a candidate for Earth School's School Leadership Team.
My son Luan is in 2nd grade in Rebecca/Suzanne's class. Since he started at Earth School in kindergarten, I have been very involved with managing the rooftop garden space (5th street Farm) and supporting ways to integrate gardening with the science, social studies and cooking curricula. I have written several successfully funded grants supporting the maintenance and expansion of the garden including new benches, a shade cover for the outdoor classroom space and upgraded garden compost system that will be installed during the 2017-18 school year.
This year I have also supported the creation of a team of parents who are taking on lice screenings and education for the school community. This initiative aims to not only save the ESPA upwards of $4000 per year, but also to give ES families and teachers the tools to reduce the transmission of lice in our classrooms.
In response to the budget and staffing shifts this year that have resulted in a break from Cooking as a cluster subject for all classes, I am actively organizing to help keep cooking and nutrition education an important part of student experience at Earth School.
If elected, I look forward to working with ES parents, teachers and administrators on creative solutions to our budget challenges that support the strongest educational programs for all our children at Earth School.
SLT Candidate: Malene Brissett
Malene is mother to two kids at Earth: Justin, in Jessica & Jia's class andJason, in Carole's class
After pseudo sitting in the SLT, I think it's fascinating to see the amount of influence we have as a school in the way we want education and social learning to happen. All we need to do is to use our collective voices. I want to do this to not only add to the diversity of the SLT Committee but because I passionately believe we have a commitment to our children to make sure they are receiving a resourceful and a productive environment suitable for the differences that make all of us the same.
SLT Candidate: William Doyle
William Doyle is father of Brendan, a new 4th grader in Maya's class. I am a new Earth School parent who is amazed by what you have accomplished - - and dedicated to working with you to achieve and expand your mission, in a spirit of humility, collaboration and love.
William is a New York Times-bestselling author of non-fiction books on history and civil rights, and a TV producer for networks including PBS and The History Channel.
He also commutes to Finland as a Scholar in Residence at the University of Eastern Finland, Finland's largest teacher training school, and advisor to the Ministry of Education and Culture of Finland, which was recently named #1 school system in the world by UNICEF. His articles on education have appeared in 2016-2017 in USA TODAY, the Los Angeles Times and The Washington Post.
Previously, he was Director of Original Programming and Executive Producer for HBO.
William is a 2016-2016 Fulbright Scholar, a 2017 Rockefeller Foundation Resident Fellow, and co-author with Finnish educator Pasi Sahlberg of a book on childhood education that will be released in 2018.
SLT Candidate: James Fuentes
My name is James Fuentes, my wife is Brannie Jones. Our son Gareth is in Gikkeno's 1st grade class and our daughter Beatrix is in Ashley's Pre K class. We love Earth School. I would love to get more involved. We live in the lower east side and I grew up in the neighborhood. My gallery hosted the Mystery Art Show last year which was a successful fundraising event. In the process I felt so much more attuned to my son's world and experience at Earth School and I was happy to collaborate with other parents. It is for these reasons that I would like to serve Earth School through the School Leadership Team. I have almost 20 years of experience in the arts and over 10 years of experience running a small business in New York. As a business owner and as a neighbor, I have a commitment to playing a positive role in my community. I think I might be able to bring a enthusiastic and hopefully productive and beneficial point of view to the group. Thank you for considering me.
Good luck to our candidates and good luck to us in choosing one! They all sound great!
