Please lend your support to our new building TODAY in the following ways. Your voice can advance the needs of our new building.
There are two important things you can do today to help with the new building.
The first is to sign a letter to Community Board 2 (CB2) expressing your support.
The second is to attend the Community Board meeting next Wednesday evening (March 20th, 6:00 pm) at NYU in MetroTech, right behind the school.
Sign the Letter
Juliet Cullen-Cheung is a parent, architect and member of CB2. She drafted this letter. We are lucky to have so many families with so many skills and experiences to help us on the journey to 8th grade,
Dear Members of Community Board 2,
My child attends the International Charter School of New York; I support the development of our new school at 30 Clinton Avenue.
ICS provides a quality educational option for families in Community School District 13, but we need a permanent home. Our school has been operating out of two temporary locations in Downtown Brooklyn and the new location will provide a consolidated, purpose-built school with a full complement of amenities including a regulation gym, cafeteria, two outdoor recreational areas and proper music and science rooms that we currently do not have.
During our growth phase ICS expands into a higher grade each year, intensifying our need for space acutely. Community Board 2's support of this application would provide a welcome relief to over 300 Brooklyn families who seek the security of knowing our permanent facility is on the pathway to starting construction.
I respectfully request that Community Board 2 support the application filed at the Board of Standards and Appeals for a special permit pursuant to Section 73-19 of the Zoning Resolution to allow a Use Group 3 school at 30 Clinton Avenue (Block 1872, Lots 44, 48 and 49), in an M1-2 zoning district, in the Borough of Brooklyn.
Thank you for your consideration.
Two ways to sign:
1. We will have a clipboard at drop off and pick up in the coming days. You can add your name and address to the list when you see me or Ellen or Sterling or Joey.
2. You can paste the text above into an email firstname.lastname@example.org. Please include your name and address and please cc Matthew on the email.
Attend the meeting
The CB2 Land Use committee will hold a hearing next Wednesday night at 6:00 pm. Ellen and our Board chair will attend, as will several of the parent members of the Board. The developer and his land use attorneys will do most of the talking.
If you can attend and speak for 2-3 minutes during public comment about your connection to the community and what our new building will mean for you and your family, it would be helpful.
The hearing takes place in the Dibner Building, Room LC400, of the NYU Tandon School of Engineering. It is
on the north side of the Metrotech Commons.
Please email Matthew if you can attend. We're looking for about 10 speakers. (Of course the meeting is public and open to all; it is just not clear how many public speakers can be accommodated)
