COVID-19 Update from OUSD
Tue, Mar 10 12:57pm

Good Afternoon Families,

We wanted to pass along the most recent update from OUSD regarding the Coronavirus outbreak.  We continue to encourage hand washing for 20 seconds and using hand sanitizer at school.  A trick, for younger children who do not have a concept of what 20 seconds is like,  is to have them sing Happy Birthday or the ABC song while washing hands. Both songs are approximately 20 seconds. The custodians and teachers are regularly scrubbing down common surfaces as well as the door handles and drinking fountains.

The following is what we received this morning from OUSD:

Dear Oakland Unified Community,

The health and safety of our community is our top priority. This is the latest update regarding the novel coronavirus, also known as COVID-19.

District leadership and school site leaders continue to focus on this issue, and we are in regular communication with the Alameda County Office of Education (ACOE) and our partners at the Alameda County Public Health Department (ACPHD).

WHAT WE KNOW
The information around coronavirus changes frequently, but here is what we know as of this update:
  • There are no confirmed cases of coronavirus in OUSD schools.
  • Given that we have no confirmed coronavirus cases, we are following the Alameda County Public Health Department’s recommendations that it is not necessary to cancel school or extracurricular events (e.g., field trips, sporting events, etc.). If this guidance, or our situation, changes we will immediately inform everybody.
  • OUSD custodial staff members are following proper cleaning and disinfecting techniques on a daily basis. Out of an abundance of caution, we are incorporating walk throughs to check availability of soap and other cleaning supplies and have ordered nearly $250,000 in additional cleaning and sanitation products.
  • District staff continue to develop plans should the need to close schools arise. This decision would be made in consultation with the Alameda County Public Health Department and the Alameda County Office of Education.
  • All OUSD students, families, and staff should practice good health hygiene which includes washing your hands, staying home if you are sick, avoiding close contact with people who are sick, and covering your cough or sneeze with a tissue or your sleeve (not hands).
  • Updates from the Alameda County Public Health Department are provided here. For their latest update from March 6, click here.
  • On March 7, The California Department of Education and California Department of Health provided guidance based on four levels of coronavirus activity.
In times like this, when concerns are high, we know that rumors can take on a life of their own. All information regarding any potential cases of coronavirus will come through the Superintendent's Office, in consultation with ACOE and ACPHD.

For more information, please visit our website at www.ousd.org/coronavirus. Additionally at this Wednesday’s Board of Education meeting, we will present an update on the coronavirus and our response to it. As always you can join our meetings remotely by viewing them online at www.OUSD.org.

Thank you for supporting our students and families and helping us all navigate these challenging and evolving circumstances.

Respectfully,

OUSD Communications Team
