Clarification regarding reopening of in person learning.
Tue, Dec 1 4:49pm

Good Evening Thunderbird Families,

As most of you know, there was a message sent out today from Kyla Johnson-Trammell, our superintendent.  We want to clarify a few things with you before we all get excited about returning to in person learning.

First of all, what was sent is a “proposal.” There are still a lot of ifs.  If you read it all the way through, you will see that Alameda County Office of Education required a date for a proposed reopening.  The date of January 25, 2021 does NOT mean we will begin reopening.  When we do begin, it will not be for the total school population.  It will definitely be a phased opening.

The following are general points regarding school reopening.

  1. OUSD is continuing to pursue the option of reopening schools for hybrid instruction.
  2. OUSD is required to submit a plan to the county before being able to reopen schools for instruction.
  3. OUSD needs to have a plan and the public also will be a part of the bargaining process around resuming in-person instruction.
  4. Just because there is a date listed in the letter from the superintendent does NOT mean that we are going to open on that date. OUSD still must have the right public health conditions and a labor agreement. All unions will be a part of this process. Negotiations must be held and terms agreed to not only by OEA but all other unions involved.

Please remember, as long as Alameda County is in the purple tier, there will be NO return to in person learning.

Thank you for your patience.  Hoping you are all staying safe and healthy.

As the situation continues to change, we will pass on information as we receive it.
