Our OUTSTANDING, AMAZING TEACHER  Kristy Van Ostrand will be departing. We have thoroughly enjoyed her presence here at Thornhill.  Ms. V's leaving is a huge loss to our community.  She has done so much for our school and  been a true leader and example of the caring community we have.   Below is a letter from Ms. V.

Dear Terrific, Fantastic, Wonderful, Dedicated, Loving Thornhill Families:

These past two years have been incredibly wonderful for me as you all showed me the true values of a Thornhill Thunderbird. It is with a heavy heart that I inform you that I will not be returning to Thornhill next year.

I can’t explain how much I will miss the countless children in and out of the P-18 door with eager smiles... banging on the window if the door was locked after 8am.  The students who walked through the door and found a place to welcome mistakes as part of their learning. To all the children who were timid and shy and discovered their true passions. To the ones that were boisterous and let their true heart shine!  P-18 has been a magical place - to say the least. Your children have taught me nearly as much as I have taught them, and I have had an amazing time getting to know them and helping them grow.

I have been blessed with an exciting opportunity that I do not seem to think I can pass on.

I live within walking distance of the elementary school that I attended as a child and my second grade teacher is retiring at the end of the school year. Ever since I was in her class, years ago, she dreamt that I would take over her classroom one day. She asked me to teach summer school with her when I was only eight years old, which sparked my interest in the education field (can't say I am upset). Fortunately, I have been offered to replace her on the staff as a fourth grade teacher come the academic year of 2020-2021. With careful consideration, I think at this time more than ever with all the uncertainty, it is important to me to be close to my family and decrease my commute by 45 minutes. However, nothing can replace the Thornhill family. You all hold a special place in my heart and forever will. I am thankful is an understatement, for all the lessons that each one of you has taught me and all the smiles you have shared!

This is not a goodbye if you don’t want it to be. I have stayed in contact with teachers who meant a lot to me, whether it was through handwritten letters, emails or social media platforms. It warms my heart when I see all that your children are accomplishing each day, and I hope to continue hearing all that they are doing and exploring.

I would love to stay in touch with you and your children. You can reach me at my personal email

Sending each and every one of you hugs!

Yours truly,

Ms. Kristy Van Ostrand
