Thornhill Elementary

Hello Thunderbirds!

Thank you to everyone who has contributed to the Back to School Donation Drive! With your help, we have raised $77K so far, which is 41% of our $190K goal for the BSDD. To date, 20% of our Thornhill families have participated. Our goal is for every family to participate at the level at which you are able. Your donation to the Thornhill PFC supports incredible programs for our students, such as our library and awesome librarian, Ms. Fox! We had the opportunity to sit down with her and learn a little more about her.

Tell us a little about yourself!

I joined the Thornhill community last spring, and am thrilled to be back in the library this year! I have a BA in English Literature from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and am currently studying to get my Masters in Library and Information Science at SJSU. I have lived in Oakland for the last 14 years, and my husband and I have three daughters - two of whom are now also Thunderbirds - Lucy (4th grade), Kaya (1st grade), and Grace (Preschool).

Why did you choose to become a Librarian?

I have always had a love of books and reading. Spending time with my daughters at our local libraries and volunteering in schools, I gained a deeper appreciation for the importance of reading in a young student's education. I love that libraries are a space for children to explore new pathways and deepen familiar ones. I see libraries as a vital community resource for a school or neighborhood. I am passionate about supporting students to find what sparks their interests, and providing them with the information they need.

What kinds of things do you work on with our Thornhill students?

I plan read-alouds with the kids to get them excited about reading. Sometimes they are related to current or cultural events - other times they are materials relevant to their curriculum, to support what they are learning in their classrooms. I coordinate author visits, make book recommendations, and offer activity centers.

What do you love most about Thornhill?

The students at Thornhill are amazing! The school culture really celebrates reading and it shows - the students are excited to come in to the library, and are thrilled to check out their books! It's a joy to see them find a book they can't wait to start reading. I have also been so grateful for the warm welcome extended to me by the Thornhill staff, families, and students alike!

Thanks Ms. Fox!

And, don’t forget, you can also support our library directly. Check out the Amazon wish list to see what books Ms. Fox is hoping to add to the Thornhill collection. Remember to always start at smile.amazon.com and set up the "Thornhill Parent-Faculty Club" as your charity!
