Let’s Get Moving!!
Did you know that “Coach” (also known as Zach Johnson) is one of the amazing staff members that is partially funded by the PFC? Coach has been at Thornhill since 2014, and he has been an elementary school teacher since 2000, teaching 1st, 2nd, 4th and 5th grades. We’re so lucky to have such an experienced educator in this role!
When we asked Coach why he chose to become a PE teacher, here’s what he told us:
“PE is really important, particularly to Elementary students. A healthy lifestyle with physical activity will result in a much higher quality of life and have long lasting positive health effects. Kids these days have so many options and distractions that encourage sedentary activities.
I feel it is important to offer an opportunity and an example of how fun and easy healthy exercise can be. I was not a jock, or even a sporty kid, growing up. I didn’t like PE as a kid (gasp!), so I know and understand the reluctance that some kids feel about it. Those are the kids that I really want to reach, and that I think I am best at reaching, and that need the knowledge of how physical activity can be something for them.”
Physical activity is especially important for elementary-aged kids because:
- PE Reduces Stress - Physical activity becomes an outlet for releasing tension and anxiety, and facilitates emotional stability and resilience.
- PE Supports Learning in Other Subject Areas – It reinforces knowledge learned across the Curriculum and serves as a lab for application of content in science, math and social studies.
- PE Strengthens Peer Relationships - Physical education can be a major force in helping children socialize with others successfully and provides opportunities to learn positive people skills.
Thank you so much to the families who have already donated to support our school! You’re helping ensure that our kids continue to get an outstanding physical education at Thornhill.
We’re 20% of the way to our $190,000 goal, so we still need everyone’s help. Please consider supporting Thornhill with a donation of any amount. It takes all of us working together!
