Meet Ms. Fox, Thornhill Librarian
Thu, Oct 8 11:08am

Hello Thunderbirds!

Over the next few weeks, we are going to highlight Thornhill’s incredible PFC staff members so you can get to know them better and learn how they have pivoted to help our students excel during distance learning. Your donation to the Thornhill Annual Fund goes directly to funding amazing things for our student community, like our beloved Thornhill Librarian, Ms. Fox.

Hello, My name is Marie Fox and I am grateful to be in my third year as the Thornhill librarian. I have lived in Oakland for the last 16 years, and my husband and I have three daughters - one alumni, Lucy (now in 6th grade at Montera), Kaya (3rd grade), and Grace (K). I have a BA in English Literature from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and am currently studying to get my Masters of Library and Information Science at SJSU.

While so much has changed during distance learning, I feel fortunate to make library sessions something our students can rely on: I have the opportunity to connect with every student at Thornhill every week. I believe that stories have meaningful potential to connect us, and during these challenging times, those connections can lift us up as a community. I also believe it is incredibly important to support student engagement in better understanding our world, and in being critical thinkers. I aim to offer library sessions in which each and every student feels welcome, that offer both joy and information, and that encourage reflection.

This year I have also continued to work with the OUSD library team on providing distance learning resources, to collaborate with teachers on resources and materials that support their curriculum, and to build our Thornhill library website as a resource for our students and families. Research has shown that schools staffed with a qualified librarian have a boost to their student achievement. I aim to support all our students in their educational journey: I am passionate about supporting students in discovering what sparks their interests and helping to develop their critical thinking and information-gathering skills.

I am grateful to be in community with our wonderful students, their families, and my fellow staff and teachers, now more than ever.

P.S. If anyone is interested in supporting the library, we always need new books that are exciting for our students: you can purchase books from our wishlist on Bookshop, a wonderful way to support local independent bookstores!

-Marie Fox
