Rhythm is Math!

Thornhill Elementary is lucky to have Master Drummer, Pope Flyne, working with our TK-2nd graders. Originally from Ghana, Pope has taught African Drumming at UC Berkeley, Mills College, New College of San Francisco, University of Creation, Saint Mary's College and multiple OUSD elementary schools. Pope shares his joyful spirit and vast knowledge of African folk music, dancing, and percussion. If you have been fortunate enough to listen in as Pope lead a drumming class, you know that he is captivating. He uses a hands-on practice to introduce the students to African Rhythms based on Mathematics. Pope also teaches them how to accompany a guitar tune, a piano tune, a recorded music or how to play a solo for a Dancer. Our students LOVE learning with Pope!

Your donation to the Thornhill Annual Fund makes African Drumming a reality for our students….along with Library, PE, Gardening, five Teacher Aids and much more! Thank you for supporting our students!
