Quick, flexible volunteer opportunity - help keep the schoolyard clean!
Weekly on Mondays and Wednesdays from Feb 12, 2025 to May 29, 2025
Thornhill Elementary
Help the Green Team keep the schoolyard and front of the school clean by volunteering to pick up trash for 10-15 minutes on your schedule! You can do it after drop-off or around pick-up time or really any time that's convenient for you! There are trash grabber tools and a limited supply of bags in the plastic cabinet in the garden area (see photos). The code for the cabinet is 107. Please be sure to return the grabber tool to the cabinet when you have finished. When you're all done, please place the trash bag into one of the receptacles around campus. Another helpful task would be to gather sweaters and water bottles etc around the yard and bring them to the lost and found at the entrance to the multi-purpose room.

Here are a few tips from Laura Krueger, Thornhill parent who has been picking up trash around the school for the past three years:

Most trash is blown to the perimeter of campus, and often underneath the chain-link fence on the sidewalk side of Thornhill. Walking along the small retaining wall is usually my first path. The back side behind the coffee shop always has some too!  Other hot spots include between the portables, at the base of the tree benches near P.E., the woodland garden and behind the TK buildings and planters. Don't forget to take a look at the back patio, though it is often pretty clean. Thank you so much for your help; if I had a dollar for every cellophane straw wrapper that I have picked up over the years, I could retire comfortably.

Many thanks for pitching in to keep the schoolyard clean!
