Principal's Update
Mon, Feb 8 11:41am
Good morning Walnut Acres Families,
This coming week lays many exciting celebrations (Valentine’s Day, Lunar New Year- the year of the Ox, President’s Day, and Black History Month), and teachers have planned fun activities for our kiddos. Who doesn’t love receiving Valentine’s Day cards and candy? Thanks to our teachers for taking the extra mile to make learning fun and parents for your help to make these activities possible. Our Kindergarten team has initiated a Valentine’s Day Scavenger Hunt in which the children will explore neighborhood selected learning points and engage in physical exercise at each point.  First and fourth grade students will be exchanging Valentines. Second graders will virtually visit the penguins at the Academy of Sciences on Thursday. Third grade just had their Football Friday.  Fifth grade students are watching various clips from movies to learn about the Civil Rights movement. Have an action packed 4 day week!

School Board Meeting, Feb. 10, 6:00pm
Tune in to the February 10, 2021 School Board Meeting when Dr. Clark will provide the MDUSD Board of Trustees a formal update regarding our COVID-19 safety protocols, state and county requirements for reopening, and the status of negotiations.

English Language Proficiency Assessments for California (ELPAC)
If you are a parent of a student who is an English Learner, you may have received a letter from the district about ELPAC. This year, Walnut Acres students identified as an English Learner will take the state mandated ELPAC assessment starting in March.  Parents cannot choose to have their child opt out of this test. This test is important because it measures how well students understand English when it is not the language spoken at home.  The test has four parts: Speaking, listening, reading, and writing. The results inform teachers about the students' level of English proficiency and guide instruction for English Language Development. More details will be coming from the classroom teachers later this month.

Stay calm and Jaguar on,
Principal Luong
