Walk and Roll to School this Wednesday
Don’t forget to walk or roll to school this Wednesday, October 4th in honor of National Walk to School Day! Collect a prize near drive through or at the Wiget Lane entrance to school. Representatives from the traffic safety program Street Smarts will be fitting and giving out helmets to students who NEED a new helmet. They will be at a picnic table near the school office. For those that roll, extra bike parking will be available near the 5th grade classrooms.
Celebrate the Completion of the Safe Routes to School Project!
It just got safer for our kids to walk or bike to school, thanks to a partnership between Walnut Acres Elementary, Foothill Middle School, the City of Walnut Creek and a dedicated team of parents and community members.
Back in November 2015, Walnut Acres parent Cherise Khaund created a change.org petition asking for pedestrian safety improvements. The Safe Routes to School project resulted in multiple improvements on Wiget and Cedro, including two new flashing pedestrian beacons, three new crosswalks, a new bike lane on Cedro, digital speed signs, and sidewalk bulbouts that slow down cars and create safer and shorter crossings for pedestrians.
This Wednesday, following our Walk and Roll to School event, there will be a short celebration at 8:20am in front of Foothill Middle School with city council members, principals and community members. You are invited to participate and help celebrate a job well done.
Many thanks go to Coalition team members Principal Bush, Principal Dowd, Transportation staff Rafat Raie and Alex Wong, PFC/A Presidents Cherise Khaund and Anna Saunders, parents Ajit Chakradeo, Jill Ridlehoover, Mike Seftchick, Ann Marie Titterton, Elizabeth Salmon-Omski, and Linda Vanderjagt.
