Principal Ashton's Announcements

  • 2023 CA Distinguished School Award! Congratulations! Walnut Acres has been awarded the 2023 California Distinguished School Award! This is something our community should be immensely proud of. It’s an important way to celebrate exceptional schools, districts, teachers, and classified employees for their innovation, talent, and success in supporting students. The California Distinguished Schools program recognizes schools for their excellent work in one of two categories: closing the achievement gap and achieving exceptional student performance. Walnut Acres was 1 of 3 schools in MDUSD to be recognized by the State of California. The Walnut Acres teachers worked incredibly hard each and every day to make sure students have equitable access to rigorous and joyful learning opportunities in the classroom. This award is because of the hard work and dedication of the Walnut Acres teachers and staff!
  • After School Pick Up: Please remember that grades 4 & 5 do not get dismissed until 2:40pm. There should be no families/students on the blacktop/playground between 2:30-2:40. You may use the playground at/after 2:40pm. Younger grade siblings should wait at the picnic tables until their older siblings are dismissed.  When families come to the playground early it interferes with the older students' time on the yard. We also have many older students who are leaving early when they see their younger siblings. As a reminder, please do not utilize the playground until 2:40pm. 
  • Middle School Transition: Here are our plans for our 5th Grade students progressing to middle school within the Foothill residential area for 2023-2024.  All links will be on the front page of foothill.mdusd.org. A message from Principal Viana can be found here: https://www.smore.com/95kjrp
    • Monday, January 23rd: The Course Booklet will be available online.  This link will describe electives and required courses for Foothill.  Families will need to pick one elective for their incoming 6th grade child. 
    • Thursday, January 26th Griffin Road Show. Principal Vaiana will visit Walnut Acres Elementary to talk to students about Foothill and answer their questions. This is students only.
    • Wednesday, February 08th @ 6:00pm: Foothill will host an in-person  presentation for incoming 6th grade families at Foothill MS in their MU.  This presentation will include information, Frequently Asked Questions, and instructions on the Course Elective Selection Process.   
    • Wednesday, February 08th (through Tuesday, February 21st  11:59pm):  The Incoming 6th Grade Course Elective Selection Process window will open online for families to put in their child’s elective request through a Google Form.  There will be a link on our website for the form  and at the end of the presentation. I will share this with you so you can email your families–since I have no access to their email addresses.
    • Tuesday, February 21st  11:59pm: Incoming 6th Grade Course Elective Selection Process window closes.

PFC Board Nominating Committee

Do you have about 1-2 hours a month for the next 4 months to help us make sure we get all our board positions filled for the next school year?  Be a part of the nominating committee.  As part of the committee, you'll work with 2-3 others to draft communications to send out, prepare any votes that need to take place for individual roles and get the full slate prepared for final vote at the May General meeting.  All can be done from the comfort of your home!

Countdown to Ticket Sales!

Tickets sales to Walnut Acres’ exciting live auction gala begin TOMORROW, January 25th!!  

 Now is the time to:

  • Set your alarm to purchase tickets
    • Tables of Twelve: Wednesday, January 25th at 7:00pm
    • Couples and Single Tickets: Thursday, January 26th at 7:00pm
  • Consider sponsoring a Teacher to attend!  Sponsor tickets are available for purchase on January 26th. 
  • Finally, put your babysitter on notice so you can attend our Gala on Friday, March, 3rd at 6:00 PM to 11:00 PM

Dine and Donate 
Come out and support Walnut Acres on Wednesday, January 25!  Take a night off from cooking and eat at Round Table!  They will be donating 20% of all purchases made ALL DAY! 

Fun fact- did you know that the owner is a former Walnut Acres parent?  He is a wonderful supporter of our school and community!

The Science Fair needs parent volunteers to help set up, judge projects, man the open house and clean up. Please sign up HERE!


Drive Thru

5th Grade Parents- February is your month to host Drive-Thru!

5th Grade Parents: Please help us in the Drive Thru line as we open doors and greet students while they are arriving at school. As in previous years, we are having each grade level help out at the Drive Thru during specific months. We would appreciate 2-4 helpers each day. Can you help for 20 minutes in the morning, 7:40 - 8:00 am? If so, please sign up!

Here’s what to expect in the coming months in terms of the monthly volunteer schedule:

February: 5th Grade 
March: 4th Grade 
April: 3rd Grade 
May: 2nd Grade

And all of the Walnut Acres Dads and Grandpas, remember that Friday’s are for YOU!  Come help out at Drive-Thru line.  It’s an easy way to get involved in the school community!

Important Message! Please make sure to drive SLOWLY in our Walnut Acres School Zone and please observe all “No Parking” signs.  It’s crucial for the safety of students!

Kindergarten Girls Scouts Troop Interest Meeting

We’re having a Girl Scouts informational meeting for parents on Thursday, January 26th at 7pm, in the MUR at Walnut Acres! This meeting is aimed at Kindergarten families who are interested in learning more about getting started with a Girl Scout troop, but parents in other grades are also welcome to come along. If you’re unable to attend, reach out to Anna Lomas at alomas@gsnorcal.org for more information.

Lunch & Recess Duty sign-ups

 We need parents daily to help supervise students during lunch and on the playground to make sure they play safely, as well as assist in cleaning the tables between student lunch shifts. All volunteers must be cleared by MDUSD to help at lunch. Sign-up HERE

                Say  it in Lights! 

Support the PFC and put a smile on your child's face! For $25.00, the greeting “Happy Birthday ‘Your Child’s Name’” will be on display on the Walnut Acres' electronic Marquee from 7am-9pm on your date of choice. Click HERE to purchase.
Is your child’s birthday during the summer? Consider a “half-birthday” greeting 6 months after their birthday.

The deadline for submitting an order is one week prior to your child's birthday.

Drive Thru Procedures

  • Pull up to a volunteer for assistance getting your student out of the car
  • Do NOT get out of your car 
  • Have your child ready (goodbyes said, backpack ready) to exit curbside
  • Do NOT go around other cars if you are "empty"
  • Do NOT park in the drive thru line
