Garden/Science

The gardening / natural science program is one that students love to do. They pay attention, they are eager to learn from the nature and are proud of what they grow.

The volunteers take their classroom out to the garden every 2 months for 1 hour and help the kids perform specific tasks in the garden: weeding, composting, planting, harvesting, etc. For easier management the class is split in two smaller groups. While one group works in the garden with one volunteer, the other group is presented a short natural science lesson about the world around us by the other volunteer. The groups rotate after 30 minutes. Therefore two volunteers per room are a condition for this program to run. No specific skill or knowledge required. All tools, needs and instructions are provided. During the growing season (Sep-Nov and Feb-May) it is important that the garden parents find time every week or so to pull weeds from their plots (reserve 15 minutes a week).
