The Whiting Lane School Parent Teacher Organization held its fifth meeting of the school year on Thursday, January 8th, 2026 in the school library. Thank you to the parents, board members, teachers, and staff members who attended. Please mark your calendars for our next meeting scheduled for Thursday, February 12th, 2026 at 6:30 pm. Our PTO holds meetings on the 2nd Thursday of every month with childcare available for those who attend. Please join us in-person or virtually!
Thanks to the generosity and commitment from our Whiting Lane Families, the fundraiser at Birdcode in December raised $1,000 towards our Whiting Lane Food Pantry! Also a special shout-out goes to the folks at Birdcode for supporting our mission. Additionally, our January fundraiser on Monday 1/12 at bartaco earned $40 (10% of $394 in sales of non-alcoholic beverages and food). The PTO appreciates everyone's active participation in these restaurant fundraisers. Consider attending our next fundraiser at Playa Bowls on Friday, February 13th!

On Your Mark! Get Set! Go! - Join the Whiting Lane Running Club today! Our first race together will be The O'Hartford 5K, 10K and Wee Mile on Sunday, March 15th, 2026 at Trinity Health Stadium in Hartford. Recently founded by Whiting Lane parents interested in running local races with their children and other Whiting Lane families, the WL Running Club will sign-up for local races together, wear our Whiting Lane gear, and cheer each other on! The Club will also organize running meetups and practice runs on the Whiting Lane track before races. There is NO COST to join and you can participate as much or as little as your schedule and muscles allow. SEPTO (Special Education Parent Teacher Organization):
A district-wide organization and open to all, SEPTO holds virtual meetings and in-person sessions for those looking to connect with other families of students with special needs. On January 27th, 2026, about 20 attendees joined the latest, virtual SEPTO meeting. The next virtual SEPTO meeting is scheduled for Monday, March 16th. SEPTO is still looking for a Whiting Lane parent representative to: serve as liaison to our school PTO, special education staff, families of students with special needs and SEPTO; provide updates to the WL PTO regarding special education related topics and concerns; and share SEPTO events with the Whiting Lane school community.
Mark your calendar for SEPTO's "Coffee & Connection" on Wednesday, February 11th at 6:30 pm, in-person, at Yemerica Coffee at 1000 Farmington Ave. If you're parenting a child with an IEP, 504 Plan, or learning differences, this is a space for you. Join us for "Coffee & Conversation": a laid-back meet-up to connect, talk, and feel a little less alone.

Finally, on Monday March 2nd at 6:30 PM, SEPTO will holds its CPAC (Connecticut Parent Advocacy Center) Workshop at the West Hartford Town Hall in room 400. This meeting will inform families on how to effectively communicate with your child's school, and advocate for your child's appropriate education, including: tips on preparing for meetings with school staff, how to clearly communicate questions and goals, and how to foster positive relationships with school staff. PTO By-Laws Revision Committee - A subcommittee consisting of three Board and three non-Board members will meet once a month between February 2026 - May 2026 to review and to revise our current Whiting Lane PTO Bylaws. Each month the Committee will review a certain set of existing Articles, offer suggestions on possible revisions with rationale, and those suggestions will be presented at monthly PTO meetings. Once the revisions are complete, the proposed changes will be shared with the Whiting Lane Community, for final comment and ultimately a vote, prior to the June 2026 PTO Board meeting. Composting at Whiting Lane - Our composing efforts at Whiting Lane officially began on Tuesday, January 20th, 2026! Thank you to the parent volunteers who have been assisting so far, helping our student environmentalists learn how to navigate the composting process in the cafe. The school is still looking for parent volunteers to help facilitate the food scrap collection during lunch, especially for the younger grades. You can volunteer any day of the week, as often (or as little) as you are able. We're looking for at least two volunteers per lunch wave, each day. Volunteer windows are: 11:15-12:30 and 12:30-1:30. It's especially helpful to have volunteers for several weeks after the program begins, not just the first week, and volunteers are always welcome to come help with sorting♻️.
