Hello Wicklund Families:
WSF will be hosting America’s Battle of the Books program again this year. We wanted to share the reading list in case your child(ren) want to start reading over the school break.
What is Battle of the Books?
It is a reading incentive program where students read books and then come together in teams to test their knowledge of the books they have read. Everyone can read all of the books or they can divide them up, as long as every book is read by at least one team member. Then after a few months, we have our battle competition. The student competition is a fun, family-feud style event where scholars in 2nd through 8th grade answer questions about the books for points. Teams compete against each other. First place is awarded in each grade-level group and an overall high score is awarded. To make it a bit more exciting this year, we are looking to include all K-8 schools in the district. We are hoping that each school will provide one or two teams at each grade level for the competition.
There are book lists for each grade-level combination: 2nd Grade (12 books); 3rd & 4th (20 books); 5th & 6th (20 books); and 7th & 8th (20 books). Students in 3rd and 4th combine as a team, 5th and 6th as a team, and 7th and 8th as a team. Book lists are attached within this Konstella message for your reference.
When will this start and when is the competition?
Your child can start reading now! All of these books are accelerated reader books, so students can easily achieve their AR goals by reading them.
We are in the process of creating a website for registration and working with the other schools to determine a date for the battle competition, most likely in the spring. All of this information along with the book list can also be accessed at http://www.mhwsf.org/#/botb/
