Dear Willow Glen families,

 

On behalf of the entire PTA Board, I want to thank you and congratulate you on another successful year for the school, the PTA and our children. Despite the challenges of Covid-19, the PTA exceeded our fundraising goals and made a huge impact on our school and for our children.

 

Leading up to shelter-in-place, parents, grandparents and friends volunteered thousands of hours both in and out of the classroom. You showed up as art docents, event chairs, set-up and clean-up crews, readers in the classroom, and so much more, which speaks volumes about the commitment our families have to all our children.

 

We also had a phenomenal year on the fundraising front that was not at all slowed by sheltering in place. In fact, our community’s support was stronger than ever. The amazing volunteer leaders of our 5K and auction pivoted quickly to successful virtual events, ensuring our PTA will have some additional resources to support our school next year.

 

Via our four main fundraisers, we raised approximately $190K, exceeding our goals by almost 30% which is truly amazing considering two of our largest fundraisers had to go virtual:

 

Annual Giving: Approx. $93K

Auction: Approx. $22K

Walkathon: Approx. $30K

5K: Approx. $49K 

 

A huge thank you to our fundraising leads: Julia Casto, Cyndi Kavanagh, Melisa Chacon, Gini Bossenbroek, Dana Peak, Sara Lawson, Julie Leif, Debbie Lewis, Alexis Cherniavsky, Martha Williams, Chris Roth, Bob Briski, Chris Rowe, Darren Cross, Paula Valdivia, Helene Ehrlich, Dennis, Rolleri, Kelly Rolleri, Alicia Guitron-Smith, Renee Love and Addison Zucek (Bellerman student). 

 

Despite the disruption of COVID-19 that abruptly ended our in-person classes and events, we still have highlights to share as well as how we are planning for a successful upcoming school year.

 

Some highlights from the year:

 

  • This year we launched the Willow Glen Cares program! We heard from many of you that you wanted to help our families in need in our school community all year long, in addition to the holidays. So we re-branded Elf Giving in alignment with the program at the middle and high school and formed the WG Cares program. During the shelter-in-place, Ms. Knapp and Ms. Alvarez helped us distribute $11,245 donated by WGE parents to families in need at our school.

 

  • We brought back school-day PE enrichment that was run by our amazing after-school program, Willow Glen Community Extended Day Enrichment!  PE enrichment brought PE to every class twice per month; supported our teachers and yard duty during recess; helped ensure the PURR culture is reinforced; taught all children consistent rules for playground games; and ran the Tiger Leaders program for fourth and fifth graders. And we’ve only heard positive things from teachers, parents and students. 

 

  • PTA volunteers led countless art, garden and anti-bullying lessons and led multiple events and programs, including kinder welcome events, the Ice Cream Social, the Harvest Festival, Walk to School Day, the book swap, the Book Fair, the Tree Lighting, Science Family Fun Night and the Father-Son event, among other things.

 

Supporting the 2020-2021 school year:

 

In June, the PTA membership approved a preliminary budget similar to last year, including all of the enrichment programs and activities you value so much, like Schmahl Science, music, PE, art and the garden. We are in discussions with our providers about how to adapt to a partial or fully virtual program, once we learn what the district’s plans are for the school year. 

 

And as I mentioned, because of our successful fundraising, we have reserve funding we will keep on hand until we learn more from the school and teachers about how we can best support them when we return to school.

 

We are also forming two new committees, a Covid-19 Response Committee to work with the school to determine what's needed and make recommendations on spending, and an Inclusion Committee to ensure the PTA is representing and celebrating our diverse community with our programs and spending. I want to give a special thank you to Ms. Knapp, Ms. Alvarez, the PTA Board and all of our leads for our programs, as well as anyone who has volunteered even an hour for the school or PTA. Your generosity in support of our students and families is truly inspiring.
