  •  What are the different Homeroom Captain roles?
  • Homeroom Captains serve as the primary party planners and organizers for the homeroom.
  • Lead Captains serve as the team leader and are the primary contact for communicating with the teacher and classroom parents about homeroom business. Lead Captains should send out an introduction letter to parents and take the lead initiating setting up party planning.
  • Co-Captains share the Lead Captain responsibilities. It may be helpful to split the work such as one designated communicator to the teacher and one to the parents.
  • Volunteers are parents who have volunteered to assist in Homeroom Captain responsibilities such as party planning and execution but are not the lead or primary point of contact.
  • If you are not planning on volunteering in the classroom, then you DO NOT need your clearances to be a homeroom captain.

What should I do with the information from the parent letter I send out?

Create a communication list from all collected responses or cross reference the classroom list on Konstella. Homeroom Captains need to be able to communicate with as many families as possible. Due to the Konstella initiative at Back to School night, there are many families registered to a classroom already.

Track who is willing to help during the day, in the evenings, have special skills, etc. Some find creating a spreadsheet of responses is helpful. Work as a team to use the parents who would like to be involved. Sometimes there is a large number of people who like to help, but a limited number of people allowed in the classroom. You are allowed to have parent helpers on the day of class parties to come in and help.

*** Please remember that only cleared volunteers may assist in the classroom. ***

  • What will I need to ask parents for during the year?

This will vary from classroom to classroom. You should plan to ask parents to send in the supplies needed to run a successful party. We have templates that we will send to make this super easy to do!

If, as a Team, you decide you would like to purchase a class gift for your teacher (for holidays, birthdays, teacher appreciation, end of year, etc.), you will also need to send out a request for monetary donations. Please be aware this is not required but again I have templates that I will share and ideas that you can use, just reach out!).

  • How do I request and collect donations?

It is strongly suggested to use Konstella to create sign-ups for parties, communicating about any teacher gifts you may give on the class’s behalf, etc. Don’t forget to double check who is on the classroom Konstella list – you may not want the teacher copied on what gift you may be getting them! You can message the classroom without the teacher by clicking on “Message Subgroup” and selecting all but the teacher’s name.

***Please note that Homeroom Captains are not expected to buy all of the supplies and food for parties out of their own pockets. Each classroom has a budget of $50 for the year and parents are always willing to send in donations when asked.  Sending out a request 2-3 weeks prior to the party or event being planned will give time for Homeroom Captains to ask for additional help or tweak plans as necessary. PLEASE PLAN FOR ALLERGIES AND COMMUNICATE CLEARLY WITH THE TEACHER AHEAD OF TIME SO YOU ARE AWARE OF ALL DIETARY NEEDS FOR THE CLASS.

  • What is a typical party like?

Parties are typically 45-90 minutes in length. This may vary for each party depending on scheduling factors and teacher preferences. The amount of parties and parents allowed at each party is up to the classroom teacher. There are usually 2 parties for the year: fall festival, winter holiday party. Please have the lead teacher point of contact discuss with the teacher what the teacher is hoping for throughout the year. Parties usually include food, games, and a craft. Some people find whole group activities work well, while others like to create “stations” and break the class into smaller groups and rotate.

Please feel free to reach out with any questions!  Thank you!
