De Portola PTA - STEM Fridays
Fri, Mar 16 1:35pm-2:35pm
de Portola Elementary Room 11

What is being offered?

The De Portola PTA's STEM Committee is excited to open up an opportunity for students grades K-6 to sign up for STEM Lab/Khan Academy Lab. We are offering this sign up as a 4 week session starting at February 23-March 16. It will take place immediately after school from 2:35pm - 3:35pm, and will be broken up by grade level. Part of that 1 hour class will be spent working on a lab, and students will rotate between their designated lab and the computer lab for work on Khan Academy.  The STEM offerings by grade level are listed below:

Kindergarten-3rd Grade

  • Science Lab (life science, chemistry, biology, physics, etc.)

4th Grade-6th Grade

  • Drone Lab (coding, soldering, building drone, etc.)

Space Availability

We would like to ensure that this is a great learning opportunity for your children, so given our current volunteer resources and space, we are capping how many students can attend this session. If we find there are more parent volunteers available, we can add more slots to the Kindergarten-3rd Grade program for this session that are offered.

Kindergarten-3rd Grade: 30 students

4th-6th Grade: 20 students

How to Sign Up

To sign up your child, please sign up in either K-3rd Grade Students or 4th-6th Grade Students. In the note section, please write your child's name and grade (e.g. "Ethan, 3rd). To sign up more than one child in K-3rd Grade, write both names and grades in the note section (e.g. "Ethan, 3rd; Natalie K).  Please sign up by Thursday so we can plan accordingly for that many students.

To sign up to volunteer, you click "Sign Up" in the parent volunteers section.

Behavior Policy

* Since we have a limited number of parent volunteers who are trying to spark student interest in Science and Technology, any behavioral disruptions will take away from that goal.  We ask all of you to ask your children if they would like to participate in the program.  If they do not, then we kindly ask that you either not enroll them or arrange for a parent or grandparent to directly supervise them. A detailed copy of the behavior policy will be emailed to the parents of all participants prior to Friday.

* All school-wide behavior expectations remain in effect during STEM Fridays.

* Students must be respectful of all materials and supplies within the lab room, and abstain from handling objects that are not part of the day's lab.

* Students must be courteous to all parent volunteers.

* Student behavior that disrupts the learning environment will be communicated to their parent. Multiple incidents of disruptive behavior may result in dismissal from STEM Fridays.

Parent Volunteers

This STEM program is run completely by parent volunteers, and we need your help to make sure everything runs smoothly. We are asking for parent volunteers to commit to this 4 week session. To help keep the kids engaged and focused, we are asking for a minimum of 6 parent volunteers for grades K-3, and 4 parent volunteers for grades 4-6.

Khan Academy Sign Up

To make sure your child is ready for Friday, we are asking that you please sign up for a Khan Academy account prior to Friday if they are signing up for this session. Attached to this sign up are step-by-step instructions  for signing up for a parent account and creating an account for your child(ren).

If they already have a Khan Academy account, please be sure that they bring their Khan Academy login and password and their Saddleback login and password in order for them to accrue points on their Khan Academy accounts.

Thank you!
