1. Sport-a-Thon Fundraising
Our goal is $95,000 ($170 per student) to support programs like science, PE, field trips, music, mindfulness, and classroom supplies. With expected district cuts, your support is more important than ever.  We have raised more than 57% of our goal.  Thank you so much families! Next week, we’ll announce which classes showed outstanding Sport-a-Thon generosity and earned a class prize! There is still time to donate to reach our goal, only $36K left.

2. WCMS Elementary Open House 4/23
Our Elementary Open House is Thursday, April 23 from 5:10–7:30 PM. Families are invited to visit classrooms, hear from the principal, and celebrate student learning. See the attached flyer and more details can be found on the Konstella. Food and drinks will be sold to fundraise for the 2027 China Trip.  Note that Thursday, 4/23 is a minimum day for TK-5 only. 

3. Yearbooks available for Order! Deadline April 20
We're happy to announce that we are now offering pre-orders for the 2025-2026 West County Mandarin School yearbook (https://store.shopyearbook.com/wcms2026). We hope this yearbook encapsulates the best memories and highlights of our wonderful community.

The yearbooks are being sold at cost, and e-book copies are free

Pre-order will be open through April 20. If you order by this deadline, we can get free bulk shipping if we reach the minimum threshold of 50 yearbooks. The Yearbook Committee will announce in-person pickup times as soon as the yearbooks are available.

Picaboo offers the option where families can customize up to 4 pages for $6.95 (e.g. add personal pictures of your student or add a personal message). If you need additional pages, you can add up to 8 more for another $1.50 per page. Customization for the pre-order must also be submitted via the Picaboo webstore (link below) by April 20.

If you are interested in having a printed yearbook but need financial assistance, please reach out to Dr. Peterson (epeterson@wccusd.net) by April 13.

If you are interested in donating a yearbook, you can do so at checkout. If you want to make a smaller donation to help a family purchase a yearbook, you can Venmo @Sonja-Mah or Zelle Sonja Mah; both accounts are linked to 510-334-7488; please add a note indicating "yearbook donation." Any excess funds will be forwarded to the PTA.

4. Cotton Candy Sale Afterschool 
The 5th Grade Field Trip Fundraising Committee will be selling cotton candy today, 4/17 from 2:00–3:00 PM after school!

5. Join the Campus Transition Team
We’re inviting families to join the Campus Transition Team to help support the move of WCMS Elementary to the Betty Reid Soskin site. This group will provide parent input and feedback to Dr. Peterson and the district, help share information with the community, and support advocacy and grant opportunities. (This is an advisory group, not a decision-making body.)

Update: The team-only walkthrough of the Soskin campus has been rescheduled to Wednesday, April 29 (previously 4/22).

Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week is May 4–8, and this is our chance to show gratitude for the amazing people who keep our kids safe, supported, and learning every day. We have several optional, fun ways for families to participate—join in for one day or all week! 

🎉 Friday 5/1 – School Decoration Day
Sign up to decorate classroom doors and create banners to surprise our teachers and staff. We will have an additional day on the weekend, details to follow.  

🍪 Wednesday 5/6 – It’s Such a Treat to Have You as Our Teachers!
We’re hosting an Appreciation Luncheon.

7. 🚀 Save the Date: STEM Night is Coming! 🔬
Join us for an evening of hands-on discovery at our annual STEM Night on Thursday, May 28, from 5:30–7:30 PM at the WCMS Elementary Campus MPR. We’re teaming up with the Richmond Fab Lab to bring students exciting stations filled with science, math, and engineering fun! 💡 Want to design a new activity station? We’d love your ideas! Reach out to Pier LeBlanc at president@wcmspta.org to get involved. More details will be shared soon on Konstella and we’ll be looking for volunteers to help run the stations. Come be part of the magic!

8. 🎨 Art Updates from Niu Laoshi — Where to See Our Students’ Artwork Around the East Bay
We’re excited to share wonderful opportunities for families to view and celebrate our students’ artwork currently on display across the East Bay!

🖼️ Contra Costa County Education Department Art Show
Location: 77 Santa Barbara Rd, Pleasant Hill, CA
The Contra Costa County Education Department Art Show is officially installed and now open for viewing! Families are warmly welcome to visit. Please note:

  • The exhibition is located in a building across the street from the Education Department’s main office.
  • A badge is required for entry, so families must schedule an appointment before visiting. To arrange a tour, please contact the exhibition coordinator: Tracy McManus — tmcmanus@cccoe.k12.ca.us


📚 Student Exhibition at Hercules Library
Our students’ artwork is also proudly displayed at the Hercules Library, and families are encouraged to visit with their children to experience the exhibition together. For many students, this is their first time showcasing art in a public space, and visitors have already expressed admiration and excitement seeing their work on display!

Participating classes:

  • 🦓 Zebra Class (5th Grade)
  • 🕊️ Crane Class (3rd Grade)
  • 🐧 Penguin Class (1st Grade)

Exhibition theme: Nüshu (女书)
Students created artwork inspired by Nüshu, a rare writing system developed by women in Jiangyong County, Hunan, China around the 17th century.

  • Created when women were excluded from formal education
  • Used to share stories, emotions, and build connection
  • The only known writing system created and used exclusively by women
  • Recognizable for its slender, diamond-shaped characters

This exhibition beautifully connects cultural history with the creativity and voices of our young artists.

🏛️ 60th Annual WCCUSD Student Art Show — Richmond Art Center

Congratulations to our middle school artists Eli Diamond and Marlene Hernandez-Diaz, whose artwork has been selected for the 60th Annual WCCUSD Student Art Show!

📚 Exposición de estudiantes en la Biblioteca Hércules.
Las obras de arte de nuestros estudiantes se exhiben con orgullo en la Biblioteca Hércules , e invitamos a las familias a visitarla con sus hijos para disfrutar de la exposición juntos. Para muchos estudiantes, esta es la primera vez que exponen su arte en un espacio público , ¡y los visitantes ya han expresado su admiración y entusiasmo al ver sus trabajos expuestos!

Clases participantes:

  • 🦓 Clase Cebra (5.º grado)
  • 🕊️ Clase Grulla (3er grado)
  • 🐧 Clase Pingüino (1.er grado)

Tema de la exposición: Nüshu (女书).
Los estudiantes crearon obras de arte inspiradas en el Nüshu , un sistema de escritura poco común desarrollado por mujeres en el condado de Jiangyong, Hunan, China, alrededor del siglo XVII.

  • Creado cuando las mujeres estaban excluidas de la educación formal.
  • Se utiliza para compartir historias, emociones y crear conexión.
  • El único sistema de escritura conocido creado y utilizado exclusivamente por mujeres.
  • Reconocible por sus caracteres delgados en forma de diamante.

预订截止日期为4月20日。如果您在此截止日期前订购，且订购数量达到50本，我们将享受免运费优惠。年鉴制作完成后，年鉴委员会将公布现场取货时间。Picaboo

提供定制服务，家长可以以6.95美元的价格定制最多4页（例如，添加学生的个人照片或添加个性化留言）。如果您需要更多页面，最多可以加8页，每页额外收费1.50美元。预购定制信息也必须在4月20日之前通过Picaboo网上商店（链接如下）提交。

如果您有意订购印刷版年鉴但需要经济援助，请在4月13日之前联系Peterson博士（epeterson@wccusd.net ）。

如果您有意捐赠年鉴，可以在结账时进行捐赠。如果您想捐赠少量资金帮助某个家庭购买年鉴，可以通过 Venmo（账号：@Sonja-Mah）或 Zelle（账号：Sonja Mah）进行捐赠；这两个账户都关联到 510-334-7488；请在备注中注明“年鉴捐赠”。任何剩余款项将转交给家长教师协会 (PTA)。

5. 加入校园过渡团队
我们诚邀各位家长加入 校园过渡团队 ，共同支持WCMS小学搬迁至贝蒂·里德·索斯金校址。该团队将向彼得森博士和学区提供家长意见和反馈，协助与社区分享信息，并支持相关宣传和申请资助。（本团队为咨询小组，不具备决策权。）

📚赫拉克勒斯图书馆学生作品展
我们学生的艺术作品也荣幸地在赫拉克勒斯图书馆展出，我们鼓励家长带着孩子一起来参观。对许多学生来说，这是他们第一次在公共场所展示作品，参观者们看到他们的作品后都表达了赞赏和兴奋之情！

展览主题： 女书学生们创作了以女书为灵感的艺术作品。女书是17世纪左右中国湖南江永县女性发明的一种罕见的文字系统。

  • 它是在女性被排除在正规教育之外时创建的。
  • 用于分享故事、情感和建立联系
  • 唯一已知完全由女性创造和使用的文字系统
  • 因其纤细的菱形字符而易于辨认

本次展览巧妙地将文化历史与我们年轻艺术家的创造力和心声联系起来。
