West County Music
Group instrument classes will be held weekly in 25-minute sessions after school, from 2:30-6pm. Each class will have a minimum of 4 students and maximum of up to 7 students per teacher. We will make every effort to group students according to age and experience, but given the smaller class size, we also anticipate being able to assist students individually during the lesson time. Students will be charged per trimester tuition, and families will have to sign a contract committing to at least three months’ worth of lessons, as well as agreeing to practice outside of the lesson a few times a week. If an instrument is not accessible to them outside of school, we will try to procure practice instruments for students in the form of rentals (if using a third party vendor), school loans, or affordable purchases. In the case of a rental or school loan, agreeing to take care of the instrument will also be part of the music lesson contract. During the lesson, students will learn as a class the basics of instrument technique. They will take turns playing the instrument and doing different musical exercises in front of and with each other. These exercises can include playing, rhythmic exercises, and singing. We will have the opportunity to introduce composers and other background context for the music they are playing. A major part of the lesson will be dedicated to learning how to play pieces that are appropriate to their level, with the intention that they build repertoire for their playing portfolio. At the end of the fall semester, students will have the opportunity to participate in a mock performance to practice performing in front of their peers. We will then have final presentations by grade/skill level at the end of the school year for friends and family.
